Walk: New Year's Eve or New Year's Day?

It's time to look back at the year and look forward to a new one. Remember Québec? That had to be one of the highlights of 2008. Here is the finish line again, only this time a little cooler. What will our big event be in 2009?

Why don't we make our first 2009 event the Balmy Beach Hair of the Dog at 11:30 am on January 1st? Donna is interested, Bob & I are, too, and others have mentioned their interest. It could replace our walk on Wednesday, which lands on New Year's Eve. Thursday's weather is predicted to be cool but clear. The distance is 9K, and the $20 fee covers a hot lunch. Just download a registration form at the link above.

Speaking of links, please take a little time to acquaint yourself with our web log (AKA blog). Many of you think of these messages only as emails. However, they are really forwarded to you via email every time I create a post on the blog. The web log itself is worth checking regularly, as collects lots of other useful info into one convenient place. You don't have to sign in to benefit from it. So have a look now by clicking on this link. In case you forget, a link to the web log for The Shore Things Walking Club appears at the end of each email reminder message.

See you on Thursday morning, or perhaps at Tim's on Saturday. In the meantime, have a safe and Happy New Year.

Walk: Mon. Dec. 29 @ Loblaws

It looked very much like wind and rain for the Resolution 5K. However, the brave starters (and finishers) shown here were treated to sunshine, from the time our feet left the starting gate till all the door prizes were drawn. Stacey, sporting a day-glow hat, was I think our only prize winner. A great little way to end the racing season.

We'll try for 6K tomorrow evening at Loblaws, weather permitting. I'll send out another post soon about training schedules for the new year.

Nike Women's Half Marathon, October 2009:

FYI, Jan will be submitting the Shore Things into the lottery for this race. If our group is drawn, then any of us who wish to go (and get our names on the list by a certain date) would qualify to enter. The Stellar Runners raved about their experience last year. Unlike the Toronto Women's Half this year, men can participate in the San Francisco race. We'll keep you posted on this.

Post-Turkey Unstuffing (weekend walks)

Dear Weather, I would like you to remember that the song goes, "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas... (not a wet one)." For reference, here's how they do it in Québec. Get it? Got it? Good.

Eighteen Shore Things and family are registered for the Resolution 5K on Sunday. Trish has emailed a car-pooling suggestion to everyone on our race list. If we missed you, please contact Trish (or me) for details. I'll leave it to you to decide whether you'll be walking both days -- but I'll be sleeping in on Saturday.

I'm sure that others will be only too eager to burn off some of those mashed potato and gravy calories. The time will be 8 am on Saturday as usual for a distance of your choosing. In January, we begin training in earnest.

Here's wishing a happy belated birthday to Eva, and early birthday wishes to Brette.

Also, happy birthday to the Shore Things blog -- it turned one year old this week.

Holiday Wishes

A client sent me this poem as a greeting for the season. I was touched by it – even more because the poet is Welsh, as my mother was – and I thought it was worth sending on. Hope you enjoy it in this weekend of snows:

SOMETIMES

Sometimes things don't go, after all
from bad to worse. Some years, muscadel
faces down frost; green thrives; the crops don't fail,
sometimes a man aims high, and all goes well.

A people sometimes will step back from war;
elect an honest man; decide they care
enough, that they can't leave some stranger poor.
Some men become what they were born for.

Sometimes our best efforts do not go
amiss; sometimes we do as we mean to.
The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow
that seemed hard frozen: may it happen to you.

by Sheenagh Pugh, a poet from Wales.

(Interestingly, Pugh hates this poem. For some FAQ side reading, click here.)

Bob and I won't be there for the Monday night walk – hope some of you get together for eggnog antidoting Ks at Loblaws. Then stock up on the rich stuff afterwards.

Our Wednesday walk falls on Christmas Eve. I might be up for a walk on the morning of, rather than in the evening. For an early start on the last-minuteness of it all, I'd suggest 8 am, with a distance of 5-6K. Would there be any takers? I'll check in later to see.

Wednesday 17 December 2008

Walk: Sat. Dec. 20 @ Tim's

Props with twinkle lights on to Sheila and Bob for being tonight's only hard-asses! (And I say this from behind a laptop that may soon be permanently grafted to my fingers.)

Let's hope we get a better showing for Saturday. That's showing, not snowing. With luck, the predicted weather warnings will have abated. If not, oh, what a perfect weekend for a long drive to Quebec. Know anyone like that?

Here's what EnviroCanada's weather warning says. You can thank me for the paragraph breaks; blame them for the caps. I say nothing of the content:

MOTHER NATURE IS STRIKING SOUTHERN ONTARIO WITH A SERIES OF WINTER STORMS. THE FIRST ONE WAS RELATIVELY TAME: 10 CENTIMETRES LAST NIGHT WITH VERY LITTLE WIND.

ON FRIDAY A FAST-MOVING BUT DYNAMIC STORM WILL HAVE EMERGED FROM COLORADO AND WILL RACE CLOSE TO THE LOWER GREAT LAKES.

HEAVY SNOW IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN IN SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO THURSDAY NIGHT REACHING THE GREATER TORONTO REGION JUST BEFORE DAWN ON FRIDAY MORNING. SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF 15 TO 20 CENTIMETRES ARE WIDELY EXPECTED ACROSS MUCH OF THE LOWER GREAT LAKES BY FRIDAY EVENING.

STRONG EAST WINDS OF 40 GUSTING AT TIMES TO 60 KM/H WILL DEVELOP THURSDAY NIGHT AND CONTINUE ON FRIDAY. THIS WILL COMPOUND THE SEVERITY OF THE STORM GIVING NEAR WHITE-OUT CONDITIONS AT TIMES IN FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW.

Oh, yay. See you 8ish?

Monday 15 December 2008

Walk: Wed. Dec. 17 @ Shoppers

It was a small but righteous bunch out on Monday night, doing a great impression of Marcel Marceau (walking into the wind). I would have posted a picture, but it blew away in a 56K gust.

Wednesday looks a bit calmer, albeit flurrier. Looks like we might get a White Christmas. Hope to see you out at our usual meeting place for 6-8K.

BTW, as gift-giving season is upon us, have another look at the Walker's Wish List posted back in April. There might be something there for someone you love, like or need to suggest gifts to.

See you soon. I'll be dressed for the season in my twinkling lights.

Saturday 13 December 2008

Walk: Mon. Dec. 15 @ Loblaws

Oh, what a beautiful mor-ning. Oh, what a beautiful day. And, think of it: By the end of this week, the days will begin to lengthen, 3 minutes a day. That's something to warm our thoughts in the dark days of winter.

Monday will be wet and mild -- until exactly the time we head out to walk. That could be both good and not so good. Let's assume that the streets will be walkable, and meet at 7 for 6K.

Looking ahead:

With the excitement around December 25th, don't forget to schedule time to pick up your race kit for the Resolution 5K.

Also, it looks like the Robbie Burns 8K is shaping up to be our first big event of 2009. Thirteen names, as far as I can see. (Please save me having to scroll through the confirmation lists -- fire off an email to me if you've registered for something.)

But let's also keep in mind the Balmy Beach Hair of the Dog 9K on New Year's Day. It leaves the Balmy Beach Clubhouse at 11:30 am, January 1st. No need to preregister, but you can download a registration form through the link on our website. $20 bucks, and it gets you a hot lunch (and I've heard you get Schnapps at the turnaround).

P.S. There's something else niggling at my mind that I was supposed to post, but for the life of me I can't recall it. If you're out there and know what it was, please add it in the comments.

Thursday 11 December 2008

Walk: Sat. Dec. 13 @ Tim's

Join us again this Saturday, same Tim's time, same Tim's channel, for an heroic 8-10K (depending on street conditions).

Whether we use it this weekend or not, here's an approximately 8K circuit that takes us:

- north from Tim's to Queen,
- west on Queen to Broadview,
- north on Broadview to Gerrard,
- east on Gerrard to Coxwell,
- west on Coxwell to Leslie and back to Tim's.

As a side note, if we do the circuit, but turn north at Carlaw rather than Broadview, that's 6K.

The magic of this route is that there's roughly 0.5K between Queen and Gerrard, with lots of north-south streets running between the two. Therefore, you can make the route 1K longer at any time, by going down then up any two of these north-southers. Have a look at this link and I hope you'll see what I mean.

I know people like variety, and this route has potential for that. One to keep in mind.

Healing thoughts go out to those of you with parents in stages of recovery, including Karin and Rainer. Hope they're feeling stronger.

See you at 8 am, everyone, dressed for the weather.

For everyone else, please have a safe walk on Wednesday. A 6K route will take you west to Greenwood, south to Danforth, and back.

YakTrax are beginning to appear in stores. Snap up a pair for just in case, or put them on your Santa list.

Speaking of which, congratulations to our festive Santa Shufflers here, including Denise in her very first 5K event. A star in the making!

And very belated happy birthday to Barb S. I really need to read my own calendar sometimes!

Saturday 6 December 2008

Walk: Mon. Dec. 8 @ Loblaws

It was a fine walk for a grey day, and our 10K went quickly. Hope the Santa Shufflers had fun, too.

Schedules are now posted on the blog for four spring races. In case you noticed these earlier, two were revised just this morning, as I realized I'd somehow skipped two weeks over Christmas. Strange how that can happen. Do have a look, and print the one(s) that apply.

I also have calendars and books to give out, which I'd like to clear off my credit card before the holiday madness kicks in. Please contact me if you'd prefer to arrange a pick-up on non-walk days.

There's a winter storm abrewin' early next week, apparently, but I think we'll avoid the worst of it on Monday night. See you at 7 for 6-8K.

Thursday 4 December 2008

Walk: Sat. Dec. 6 @ Tim's

There's something about those grey skies that makes red particularly welcome in our northern climes. Perhaps that's why Santa wears a red suit? Here, you get a vanishing perspective of reds, from our good-looking gals to Canadian Tire. But, contrary to what that road sign says, this way back to Tim's is definitely the "right way."

Good luck to all the Santa Shufflers on Saturday. For everyone else, please join me at Tim's for a bracing 10K.

FYI, I'll soon be posting four race-specific schedules to the blog. Any Peterborough Half and Chilly Half participants need to start training over the holidays. Training for our Shore Things 10-Miler begins in earnest in the new year. At the beginning of February, we'll start the schedule for the Toronto Women's Half, though we'll have to adjust it for those also doing our home-grown race. Those looking to do other races, please let me know soon.

Please read the fine print:

Trish and I plan to develop a set of four routes from Tim's, one for each direction, with text instructions and marked turnaround points. (You knew that, didn't you, Trish?) Please print up all four, and carry them in your pouch. As some of you will be doing different events, I'm asking you each to be responsible for knowing your distance, using your schedule -- and your own turnarounds, using your map.

This will help me immensely, so thanks in advance. See you soon.

Monday 1 December 2008

Walk: Wed. Dec. 3 @ Shoppers

Maybe it is a little early for this guy. And, no, it isn't Neil Diamond -- though that's who many of our Wednesday walkers have a date with this week. For the rest of us, let's go for 8K. We can sing Neil Diamond songs for an aerobic workout. See you at 7 pm.

On the other hand, or foot, I'm highlighting Santa here because there are now eight of our gang signed up for the Santa Shuffle on Saturday. Trish tells me she might have room for one more in her family group. Email her if you'd like to be part of it.

Kelly Arnott (she of the Chilly and other races) also writes that there are still 150 Santa Suits left for the race in Burlington the following Saturday, Dec. 13th. This race benefits the St. John's Ambulance. Want to join a phalanx of 1,500 briskly moving Santas?

See. We had lots to say about the Jolly Old Fellow.

Next weekend, a few of our members will be Santa Shuffle-ing. There's time to join them if you're interested. The race is in support of the Salvation Army, who do good works especially at this time of year.

Most races in December fall into this "fun run" category. We need to create a rhyming term like that for walkers -- "walk 'n' talk"?

After the holidays, we'll start training for early spring races. I've heard at least one murmur about the Peterborough Half in February. Then there's our Shore Things 10-Miler (that's 16K) at the end of March. Also on my list of spring possibles is the Waterloo Half in April.

Let me know what your races are, so I can plan a dated schedule. Generic/undated schedules are already on the blog.

Thursday 27 November 2008

Walk: Sat. Nov. 29 @ Tim's

Here's how our intrepid duo Marg and Rainer looked after last weekend's Whitby race. A polar bear medal graces their gear, to go with the snow.

This Saturday, let's take advantage of the predicted sunshine for 8K on the Spit or the Boardwalk. Now's the time to voice your pick.

Calendars have arrived -- and they land at a good price, thanks to the group discount: CDN $25.61. I'll bring them, and the yearbooks, on Saturday. Not to seem like a broken record, but please bring a cheque, not cash. Thanks!

Looking forward to seeing you for our last walk before December. Hasn't this year sped by!?

Monday 24 November 2008

Walk: Wed. Nov. 26 @ Shoppers

Rain. Snow. Rain. More rain. Snow.
We interrupt this weather for a brief Tuscan moment. (Jaunty Tuscan musical interlude. Spot olives in tree on the left. Gaze at landscape. Smile.) Thank you, Dawn and Charlotte.

Now, back to reality. If it's slippery on Wednesday, we won't be walking. Otherwise, I hope to see some of you out at 7 pm for 6K.

Congratulations to Marg & Rainer who did the Whitby Waterfront Race last Sunday. Marg was 3rd walker overall, chip time. Well done!

And congratulations to my guy Robert for his first gig with The Nerve. Thanks to everyone who came out to support him at the Black Swan.

FYI, Calendars and Jean book reprints have been ordered, and should be here on Thursday. I'll email you with the final cost, but the calendars at least look like they'll be a little less than expected (touch olive wood). I'll bring them on Saturday. Please bring a cheque, not cash.

Till then, see you Wednesday at 7 pm.

Saturday 22 November 2008

Walk: Mon. Nov. 24 @ Loblaws

Great turnout on Saturday: 26 walkers on our first day of wintery, sub-zero temps. We all deserve a gold star!

Soon, we'll have a calendar to put one on. I'm ordering this weekend, so they should be here Thursday. If you decide you want more, I have 40 days to reorder -- you just won't get the 10% discount.

I've also received more orders for the Jean hardcover book. If you want one too, please email me by Sunday noon, which is when I'll be ordering the reprint. Grouped orders save a little on shipping.

Two new races are now on our race calendar: the Eggnog Jog 10.8K on Dec. 14th -- highly recommended by Joanne Burton of the Stellar Runners -- and the Okanagan Half in October (no 2009 date yet, but Sheila plans to walk it). Check them out if you're considering new things to try.

Also, the Robbie Burns 8K now has an official walkers' category -- yay, them! Sign up soon to get your tartan PJs. A race designed to bring out the Scot in all of us.

While the icon for Monday's weather shows rain and snow, the actual precip looks minimal. Let's plan to be out for our 6K, dressed for the weather. If there's any change, check the blog comments for news.

See you tonight at the Black Swan -- or see you Monday at 7 pm.

Thursday 20 November 2008

Walk: Sat. Nov. 22 @ Tim's

Here is a happy dance from Olwyn -- she has just been told her name has been added to the Toronto Women's Half. If you haven't emailed to ask to be on the waiting list, it wouldn't hurt to do so. And, if you've received a confirmation, please let me know, so I can put a star beside your name.

Saturday will be wintery, but fingers crossed, not snowing. Let's take our winter route and head through Riverdale to Broadview and Danforth. That's about 8K.

Now is the time to dust off the Yaktrax for winter traction. Watch out for damaged ones, as they can snag clothes and trip you. We won't always need them, but it's worthwile to have Yaktrax in your winter wardrobe.

Bob's gig is Saturday evening. Hope you can make it out for an evening of musicianship. Details still posted on our blog.

The Shore Things 2008 yearbooks and the Jean book have arrived. I'll bring them on Saturday -- please bring a cheque (I still have to calculate the amount). Saturday will also be the last day to order a calendar, in person or by email. They'll be ready the following Saturday, or before.

To close, a very belated birthday to Ruth! Hope it was a great celebration.

Monday 17 November 2008

Walk: Wed. Nov. 19 @ Shoppers

It's that time of year when proper warm up and cool down or stretching is particularly important for cold muscles and cold weather. Let's remind each other to do that. (Comic credit to the "for dummies" cartoonist, Rich Tennant, courtesy of Ruth).

It'll be 6K again on Wednesday. Just enough to keep us hot blooded.

Speaking of hot blooded, a reminder that our own speedy guy Bob will be demonstrating his speedy fretwork this Saturday, Nov. 22nd at The Black Swan on Danforth, between Chester & Broadview. The band of Jan's son Alan will be playing warm-up. It has been a great combination in the past, so come out and catch the best of musicianship, emerging and emerged, with an all-originals evening. The music begins around 9 pm. A $5 cover charge goes straight to the musicians.

FYI, Apple has just emailed to say the yearbooks are on their way. Once the charge comes through, I'll let you know the final cost. I'll be ordering calendars next weekend so that everyone who wants one will qualify for the 10% discount. Saturday will be the cut-off date, so please confirm asap.

Failing a blizzard, see you on Wednesday at 7 pm.

Saturday 15 November 2008

Walk: Mon. Nov. 17 @ Loblaws

Another rainy Saturday! Yet, you can see by the tiny specks disappearing along the road we still had a decent (albeit waterlogged) turnout. We Shore Things rock... and sometimes we drip.

Looks like the weather will be much nicer for Santa's visit tomorrow (good luck, Mona!), and also for our Monday evening walk. Let's keep it to 6K during this recovery period, especially during this iffy, in-between weather. Once we know our spring events, we'll kick it up.

Generic schedules for both a half and full marathon are now posted on our blog, for your walking pleasure. Simply print them up and insert your dates.

Let me know if you've signed up for races. Check these ones out -- most have links on the blog. Strangely, they still haven't cut off the registration for the Resolution 5K.

You might be chuffed to know that nearly half of those currently registered for the Robbie Burns 5K are Shore Things!

And, if your swag bag is still hankering for your very own Santa suit, take a look at the Cedar Springs Pharmacy and Levelwear Santa Jingle Run, a 5K race in Burlington on Saturday, December 13th. It's Canada's first All-Santa-Suit race. As that's what you gotta wear, of course that's what you get in your race kit. Sounds fun. Fees go up after Dec. 1st.

See you Monday at 7 pm.

Thursday 13 November 2008

Walk: Sat. Nov. 15 @ Tim's

Light rain is predicted for Saturday morning, but that doesn't mean we can't get out and clear the cobwebs with a brisk 8K.

As more inducement, this brief articlette in today's Toronto Star suggests that walking fast will help us live longer: 3.6 mph is the ideal rate. So come on out and pick up the pace. We want to have you around for as long as possible!

See you Saturday at 8 am, dressed for the weather.

Meanwhile, don't forget to add your thoughts and wishes to our events and activities listings for winter and spring. Visit the blog to read and write some ideas.

Spring Shore Things Discussion

Here are some of the ideas for spring events -- post your comments with ayes or nays:

- We have five walkers signed up for the Chilly Half on March 1st, so you'd have company if you're interested -- there are still a few walker places open

- We're also proposing our own Shore Things 10-Miler on March 29th (we'll need participants, volunteers and organizers -- please step up)

- The Canada Running Series is offering a "combo pack" discount (including a number of Spring races we might consider -- Harry's Spring 5K/8K in April and Sporting Life 10K in May)

- Incredibly, they still have not set a date for the More Marathon/Half in NYC -- stay tuned

- There's also a waiting list being generated for the Toronto Women's Half on May 31st, if you want to get your name in just in case.

- And I know that our power-hikers have signed up for a 3-day Bruce Trail Hike over the Victoria Day long weekend

Those are just some of the possibilities -- all links can be found on the blog. Please sign in and voice up.

Walk: Wed. Nov. 12 @ Shoppers

A very (very) quick post to invite you out for 8K on Wednesday -- hope to see you then -- and to wish Libby a happy birthday.

Spring event discussion thread will follow in a separate post.

Sunday 9 November 2008

Winter Shore Things Activities

This is the first post in our planning discussions. Please use this post only to discuss winter activities for our group. Add your thoughts as comments. Other seasons will follow.

Racing: I'm up first with a few suggestions. Looks like it might not be too late to register for the Resolution 5K, so check that one out asap. Also, in January, there's the Robbie Burns 8K. We already have Shore Things signed for both these races. Links are on our blog site.

Skating: When it's cold enough for natural ice, I'd love to get a group together for a skating evening at Cedarena just outside Markham. It's a wonderful old rink sheltered in a cedar valley -- like stepping back into the nostalgic past. Here are the instructions:

Public skating: Tues. (adults only), Thurs., Fri. and Sat. 7:30p.m. to 10p.m. and Sun. 1p.m. to 4p.m. Admission $5 for 16 and older, $2 for 15 and younger. No skate rentals. Take 401 to Markham Rd., north to Steeles Ave., east to Reesor Rd., and north 1 km to 7373 Reesor Rd., parking lot on east side. Call beforehand for ice conditions: 905-294-0038.

Skiing: Sheila passes along the following about an open house at MEC for the Five Winds back-country ski club she belongs to. Click on the image for a larger view and details. The live link will also take you to their website.

While I'm interested in x-country skiing, I'm not experienced enough to go for six hours yet. So I found some info on the Scarborough Cross-Country Ski Club, which gives lessons. That sounds good to me. It means I might not have to take my skis off when going up or down hills!

Please voice up with your own suggestions. This is the time and place.

Walk: Mon. Nov. 10 @ Loblaws

This shows one reason why we're so lucky to walk in the Beach. Another is the people we walk with -- many of whom were out in numbers last evening.

Now I'll get the walk part out of the way early: Monday's weather might be rainy, so we'll aim for a brisk 6K. See you at 7 pm.

Thanks again to our kind hosts for making us welcome in their lovely home on Saturday evening -- especially as they'd both spent the day banging nails and wielding drills at a Habitat for Humanity build. Wow.

Thanks also to the awards committee: Ruth (with help from Henry), Cheryl, Sharon, Cynthia and, humbly, myself. And thanks to everyone who brought the yummies. Recipes have been requested -- so send them along. Perhaps, next year, a recipe book is in order?

As for races next year, I'll be issuing a series of blog posts, one for each season. Please note your interests as comments. If you're really blog-averse, reply to the email you receive. That will come directly to me, not the group, but I'll collate the info. Once we have identified some group activities, I might use the online poll feature to gauge numbers.

Some photos from our party are now on Flickr. You'll see a few in our Flickr badge on the website. However, you'll have to sign in to see the whole set. Please add your images to the site. If you don't know how to do either of these things, reply to this email and I'll remind you. Then, please, I beg you, save the instructions somewhere safe.

Orders for the Shore Things 2008 book and calendar: If you weren't at the party, you can still order our 2008 photo album and calendar. It will be approx. $70 for the book and $30 (or a little less) for the calendar. I have 23 calendar orders now, so we'll likely qualify for the 10% discount for 25+. With 12 book orders so far, it looks like the $70 price will be fixed -- contingent on U.S. currency exchange and shipping costs. As I want to upload these only once, give folks till the end of November before ordering, so get your orders and cheques (not cash) in, please.

See you all Monday.

Thursday 6 November 2008

Walk: Sat. Nov. 8 @ Tim's (and Party!)

Thanks to our hosts, Marg & Rainer, for opening their home to this unruly bunch for our year-end party this Saturday. The festivities begin at 7 pm. I've received confirmations for 23 people (including spouses), but I know that some have replied directly to our hosts.

In response to questions: yes, it's a true pot luck, so if we end up with 23 plates of brownies, we'll just have to live with that. Remember that brownies are one of the important food groups.

To whet our appetites, I propose 10K along the Boardwalk. It's good to throw in a longer walk during maintenance mode so our bodies don't become complacent. As you know, there are easy turnbacks for those who want something a little shorter. Please feel free to invite your friends.

See you Saturday, one way or another!

Tuesday 4 November 2008

Walk: Wed. Nov. 5 @ Shoppers

Please excuse the lateness of this message -- it's crazy few weeks for me, workwise. There's a mouthful.

Sad news for JeansMariners: it's official, Bob and Jean are calling it quits. What's to happen next is still in question. I've heard talk of an alum reunuion, but nothing definite.

Whatever anyone else thinks, I know I wouldn't be here writing this blog for you if not for Jeans Marines. I'll keep you posted if there's anything to post. Meantime, feel free to send them your private messages.

This Wednesday, let's do 8K, as the weather is supposed to be unseasonably nice. If winter makes a comeback tomorrow, we'll reconsider.

Belated birthday wishes to David, and Happy Birthday to Karin. Also, congratulations to the Bruce Trail hikers, who if memory serves have walked 130K over two weekends. You rock, gals!

A reminder that our year-end party is this coming Saturday. If you haven't RSVPd, please fire off a reply to this email.

Enjoy the day today. It's one of the last gifts of summer.

Oh, one last thing -- so important, I almost forgot. Michelle has looked into a possible volunteering gig for us for next September's Weekend to End Breast Cancer. A number of us expressed interest. Below are the details. Please email me (not blog me) if you can help.

60km that can change the world: Sept. 11-13, 2009
Toronto Weekend to End Breast Cancer

I have spoken to Kristi Balmer at endcancer.ca’s about this event. After asking questions about our group, she offered two opportunities for us to volunteer as a group over a specific period of time. It’s our choice. Location likely Downsview Park or Exhibition Grounds. Can change, though. The two opportunities are:

Friday registration of walkers, 2 to 8 PM. She needs a total of 70 people for this, so if we could commit to providing 20-30, she would be very, very happy.

Saturday afternoon tent assignments, 2 to 8 PM. Needs a total of 30 people. Would love it if we just take full responsibility as a group. Maybe in concert with the Stellar Runners?

Kristi also mentioned they need individual volunteers for working the phones at their office (Yonge & Adelaide) throughout the year, and for leading walker orientations and weekend training walks through the spring and summer.

Sunday 2 November 2008

Walk: Mon. Nov. 3 @ Loblaws

Sometimes procrastination is a useful thing. This weekend, it has allowed me to gather important details for the blog. First, the walk:

Monday we'll keep it short, with 6K. Please come out and join us.

Okay, now for news: Congratulations to Margy who did a Personal Best in the Angus Glen 10K with 1:18. Way to do, girl! Remember that almost this time last year Margy was hobbling around on crutches.

Haven't heard from our hikers yet, but boy they had ideal weather for their back-to-back 20K+ hikes. I think this is it for their season -- right?

Early registration begins now for the Midsummer Night's 15K (or 30K if you're up for it). They have a draw every week from now till race day, and all those registered qualify... every week. This is one race I'm lobbying for for next year. It's nearby and neat. See the blog for links.

For those for whom orthotics are, er, dear to your soles, Norma sent along a link to a revealing Marketplace feature, which I've pasted below. (It should work in your email, but if you're accessing this link from the website, it might not be live, as Flickr's "blog this" feature doesn't let me style the text. Don't worry if what I've just written makes absolutely no sense to you: if the link doesn't work, copy and paste it into your browser bar.) Here's the link:

Pictures will also be available soon from the Kitchener Waterloo Walking Classic. You might have already received an email about this. Here's a link to their gallery -- long-winded parenthetical remark above also applies:

Bon voyage (in Italian) to Charlotte and Dawn who will be flying over Montreal on their way to Tuscany about the time we meet at Loblaws on Monday evening. Have a really, really great trip, gals!

Walk: Sat. Nov. 1 @ Tim's

Looks like a sunny weekend for our tireless hiking contingent -- let's hope they get to enjoy more views like this one. May your trails be scenic and flat. Ruth, take that camera again!

For we more-urban critters, it'll be a sunny-but-cool 8K. As we've done the Boardwalk a few times, shall we try the Spit again?

A note to anyone considering the Resolution 5K that the next price hike happens after November 1st. However, I recommend you don't wait till then, as by my unofficial count the confirmation list contains over 420 names (out of 500).

I want to wish a belated but happy Happy Birthday to Stacey, and a big one to Pat S2 today!

Plus, a good luck to Marg and Rainer this Sunday in the Angus Glen 10K.

Tuesday 28 October 2008

Walk: Wed. Oct. 29 @ Shoppers

Hey, folks. You are about to read the shortest post in the short history of our blog:

Five of our Wednesday regulars will be away at DocSoup this week -- yes, the season has started again. But c'mon out anyway for 6-8K, the distance of your choosing. Remember: there is no bad weather, only bad clothing.

Saturday 25 October 2008

Walk: Mon. Oct. 27 @ Loblaws

A slightly soggy yet lovely-in-its-own-way walk this morning brought out a small but hardy group, including two new walkers: Mona and Denise. Strangely, they say they'll be back for more.

Meanwhile, Sharon, Ruth and Suz are somewhere on the Bruce Trail, even as I write, ticking off the klics: 32 today, 32 tomorrow.

Just shows that we Shore Things gotta lotta pluck. (And some of us have cosy down comforters, which I'm sure felt good this morning, too.)

This Sunday, twenty-five 2008 Jeans Marines -- mostly walkers -- are doing the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. Some of us remember that thrill ourselves. I wish them fine weather. The last time I was there in 2004, it was an election year, too; should be interesting.

From what I've heard, this might be the last-ever group of JMs to cross that finish line and get their hug from a Marine. Their year-end celebration is this Thursday, Oct. 30th at Bob & Jean's at 7 pm, if anyone wants to attend to give them a final send-off. I might skip a class and go myself.

C'mon out on Monday at 7 pm for 6-8K. Wear your sparkle lights.

Thursday 23 October 2008

Walk: Sat. Oct. 25 @ Tim's

Hope you'll join us on Saturday for a (likely) damp but (more than likely) congenial 8K boardwalk stroll -- followed of course by the Three Cs: Coffee, Conversation and Companionship. See you at 8 am.

To our Shore Things hikers this weekend: please stay safe (and dry, if possible) and the best of luck on the trails.

A few things... first, may I introduce the head-turning new version of Leverne that you see in our picture. Sheila kindly stepped into the frame to prove that this really is our own Leverne and not some glamorous celebrity who happened upon us last Wednesday at Shopper's Drug Mart. As they often do.

Next... In my list of races last time I forgot to remind you about a fun one in January, the Robbie Burns 8K. I just tried to register Bob & myself, but it looks like they have an online registration glitch at the moment -- I've written the organizers and will update you soon.

Finally... There's now a waiting list for the Toronto Women's Half Marathon and hope to be able to add participants come spring. If you want to be included, write to them soon at: info@TOwomenshalf.com.

Tuesday 21 October 2008

Walk: Wed. Oct. 22 @ Shoppers (and looking ahead)

A fall bouquet for birthday girl, Pat! And also a big round of leafy applause for all of us -- for our hard work, dedication and fancy footwork this year. You really are Shore Things.

Let's meet on Wednesday at 7 for a convivial 6K. Bring out your friends.

Now our year-end pot luck party on November 8th is less than three weeks away. It's time to start thinking about your goals for next year.

Two good reasons to plan ahead: a) it's more fun when we can enlist in groups, and b) early registration fees are cheaper.

Have a look at the race links on our website to see what appeals to you. If you've found something new, send me the link and I'll add it for others to review. We'll discuss the options and begin to declare our interests at our party.

To get you thinking, here are some of my own picks -- most have links on our site:

- a do-it-ourselves Shore Things 10-Miler (or the Peterborough Half) in early spring
- the Harry's Spring Run-Off 5K or 8K in April
- the Toronto Women's Half Marathon in May [note: this is already sold out!]
- the Nissan 10-Miler in July
- the Midsummer Night's 15K in August
- the KW Walking Classic -- hopefully a Half -- in September
- a fall hike somewhere photogenic

Let's start talking as we're walking. See you Wednesday.

Sunday 19 October 2008

Walk: Mon. Oct. 20 @ Loblaws

It was our last big race of 2008, and the weather was a fall celebration! How lucky we were, compared with previous years. The route was splendid, too. We won't talk about how a net-downhill race can possibly have inclinations toward, shall we say, upward mobility, but I have two words for you: Hogg's Hollow. Trust me, the hollow part was the least of our worries.

Despite the hills, our times overall were fabulous. Everyone came in under 3 hours, and two of our Shore Things were outstanding. Ruth finished in 2:44! In fact, she was so fast, she was long gone by the time we snapped this victory shot at the finish line.

Special cheers go to Bob, who at last met his goal of a sub-2:30 finish with a chip time of 2:27. A great way for him to end a great year!

More of our pictures are on Flickr, but you'll have to sign in to see them all, including some cute ones of our most camera-shy member.

A couple of 60K hikes for some of our more intrepid members notwithstanding, now we get into the (not so) serious business of maintenance. That means shorter distances, and that means bring out your friends. We'd love to see all those pals who have been holding back.

Monday's walk will be 6-8K -- I'll let the quorum decide -- starting at 7 pm. Bob & I won't be there, however, as we're choosing tiles for the condo. Shout out as you pass by.

Thursday 16 October 2008

Walks: October 18 & 19

Yes, we were carb loading instead of walking last night. In fact, we should be good for all of 2009, thanks to Ted Reader's BBQ brownies, and one or two other snacks in the multi-course catered barbecue won by one of Bob's band-mates. The wee snack above began with sinfully rich home-made brownies, piled with peanut butter, chocolate chips, honey, peanuts and marshmallows -- and melted on a plank. My heart is still racing.

Speaking of dieting, for our pre-race Toronto Half pasta dinner, I have booked a table for 8 at Melanie's on Danforth (between Woodbine & Coxwell) for 6 pm. Besides the racers (minus one), and one welcome spouse, I have Trish & Sharon on the list. If you wanted to be included please let me know asap.

Plans for the Toronto Half: As there are only 6 of us, I'll link us all up via email.

This Saturday's walk will happen as usual at 8 am from Tim's. Some of the Toronto Half crew will be sleeping in (I speak mostly for myself).

And by way of closing: Toronto has named the entire month of October its Walking Festival. There are walking events happening all month long. And, of course, the day of the Toronto Half (October 19th) is a very special event: The Zombie Walk. I hope that's a warning about the aid stations: Water, gatorade, BRAAAAAAINS!

Monday 13 October 2008

Walk: Wed. Oct. 15 @ Shoppers

It's 5K! The last scheduled walk of the season. From here on in (notwithstanding the final Half Marathon of the year), it's maintenance mode till we set our first event of Spring 2009. Bring out those reluctant friends who have been over-faced by the longer distances!

That being said, Bob & I won't be out on Wednesday, as we're invited to a gourmet barbecue. Rather than burning off calories, we'll be stockpiling them. Have a great walk.

This is also a general invitation to the group: The 5 Toronto halfers are getting together for pasta on October 18th. We thought we'd ask if anyone wants to join us. Our first thought is Melanie's on the Danforth -- but I'll need to know numbers by email by Tuesday evening. It's a small place, and they need as much warning as possible.

Saturday 11 October 2008

Walk: Mon. Oct. 13 @ Loblaws

Some quick notes for those who are checking in: Monday's walk for the Toronto schedule is 6K:

- 9 am for the morning group
- 7 pm for the evening group (or sign in and decide the time you prefer -- but please do post it, in case there are others who might join you)

Heads up for those who tarry: The first-ever Toronto Women's Half in May is filling up. With about 700 (of 1000) registered, I predict the Half will be full before the end of October. Don't wait too much longer to commit to this one.

Plus: Over 360 (of 500) are registered for the Resolution 5K. It takes place Sunday, Dec. 28th this year, and the swag is a jacket with zip-off sleeves. We will likely organize a brunch afterwards. Free stuff. Food. How can you resist? Links to both races are on our site.

Finally: Happy birthday to Mona (above), who joined us on her actual big day for a heroic first walk. The best of luck to S., working on her 4th Bruce Trail badge -- and a 75K, 3-day hike -- this sunny weekend. And to Debbie, at the Royal Victoria Half-Marathon on Sunday.

To all of us, happy Turkey Time, whether or not you eat the turkey, and wherever you will be.

Wednesday 8 October 2008

Walks: Thanksgiving Weekend

Look at that blur of activity. Pure magic.

Sadly, it wasn't happening on Wednesday evening -- in the rain. That's why Jan & I will be walking 8K early on Thursday morning instead, and why at least three of us will be doing 13K on Saturday (your distance may vary). It sounds like good weather, so I suggest the Spit.

On Monday, we have takers for a 9 am walk from Loblaws. Lynne, however, is looking for company for a Monday evening walk. Please sign in and state which group you'll be joining -- there's room for both.

Belated birthday wishes to Carole. And happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Personally, I am thankful to be a member of such a great group of humans.

Monday 6 October 2008

Walk: Wed. Oct. 8 @ Shoppers

We're gradually entering that post-season state of grace, where the most energetic thing we do is to polish our medals -- after a brisk walk, of course. Speaking of medals, Scotia pictures are now online for your viewing pleasure (thanks, Olwyn!).

Wednesday night will be an exception for the Toronto Half crew: an energetic 13K. As that means only Bob & I (and perhaps Jan?), we'll get an earlier start, aiming to meet the rest of you at Shoppers for 8K -- then we'll walk home.

Hope we'll see you at 7 pm.

Sunday 5 October 2008

Walk: Mon. Oct. 6 @ Loblaws

Sunrise, sunset; sunrise, sunset -- quickly go the klics. Do you realize that, whenever we complete a full 16-week half marathon training schedule, including the race, we've walked over 600K -- 400 of them in the last 9 weeks of the schedule?

Think about that. For every half you did this season, you walked 400-600 km. Are you impressed with yourself? You should be! You should also be making sure your shoes don't need replacing

On Saturday, another 18K sped under our soles, as the Toronto Half walkers did our last long walk of training before the race on Oct. 19th -- same day, incidentally, as our Stellar pals will be doing the Nike Women's Full and Half in San Francisco.

This coming weekend, our own Debbie heads off to B.C. for the Victoria Half. Inveterate Bruce Trail hiker S. is planning her next 3-day, 75K adventure. And, as it will be Thanksgiving weekend, those of us left behind should be thinking about when we want to get together: Saturday and Monday mornings?

Monday's an easy 8K walk. C'mon out and join us.

And note these little reminders:

- there are already 600 of the 1000 max. registered for the Toronto Women's Half (May 31st), so don't leave it too long if you're interested

- ditto, the Resolution 5K, which often sells out by October

- mark your calendars for our year-end pot luck party: November 8th

- and mark November 22nd for Bob's gig at the Black Swan

Wednesday 1 October 2008

Walk: Sat. Oct. 4 @ Tim's

First, let me get this business out of the way. To the handful doing 18K for the Toronto Half: do you want to meet at 7 am, so we'll finish more or less with the rest of our group? Please post your preference.

For everyone else walking on Saturday, the time will be 8 am as usual for a friendly distance of your choosing. See you afterwards.

Now: more stories from the weekend are reaching news central. This one from Michelle, whose daughter Suzanne has just earned her first medal in style. Well done, Suzanne. We honour runners here, too. (Speaking of runners, our runners-who-are-also-walkers, Breda and Carole, aced personal bests, with 2:23 apiece. Pat on the back, girls!)

Lou-Ann was also at Scotia on Sunday. Here's her report:

"My daughter and I did the Scotiabank Charity 5 K and had a great time; Epilepsy Toronto had a good showing! We just took a leisurely walk and enjoyed the day and each other's company."

Sounds great, and you had the perfect day for it. Right now, the good-looking gals in our photo represent the only picture in our Flickr Scotia album. I hope there'll be more for you soon. Stay tuned.

Tuesday 30 September 2008

Walk: Wed. Oct. 1 @ Shoppers

Last weekend's pictures and stories are starting to roll in -- please keep 'em coming.

Preliminary reports tell me there were some amazing times in the Scotia, and at least one personal best from Barb, who whipped across the mats in 2:49:37 (real time). Libby trailed that lightning pace by only a few hundredths of a second. Lynne finished in 2:59, and Olwyn and Leverne wrapped it up in 3:06. Way to go, everyone! But how come it took 10 minutes to cross the start line? Tell!

Next, after 8 hours of slogging through rain, muck and 30K on Saturday, and 6.5 hours doing 21-hilly-K on Sunday, both Ruth and S. completed their Bruce Trail hike last weekend. Another badge down in their quest to complete the whole dang thing. You two are awesome -- and especially so to have come out for the walk the very next day (and knocking at my door to see if I was really coughing).

The last story is from picture girl Maria, who did the Walk for ALS in London on Saturday. Closer to home, you'll recall, it rained, but:

"The weather held out beautifully. It was great. I am waiting for a final count ... but I was the second highest on our team of 20 – raising over $950.00."

Kudos to all who supported her in this cause.

We seem to be into cold and flu season, which has some of us under the weather. (Looking at the rain pelting down now, I'm glad that's figurative, not literal.) Get well soon to Cheryl, Cynthia, Eva (and me).

Hope everyone will be recovered and ready for Wednesday, when the Toronto Half trainees are scheduled for 10K.

But don't let that number daunt you. To those who have finished their races for fall, or those just starting out, please join us for the distance of your pleasing. See you at 7 pm.

Sunday 28 September 2008

Walk: Mon. Sept. 29 @ Loblaws

The group shot

What a weekend, eh? The Kitchener race was a great experience. It was so great to see so many enthusiastic walkers out.

Our own guy, Robert Pelletier, broke through the ribbon to place first overall in the 10K with an amazing time of 68:30. We had two other firsts in their category, Rainer (who was 6th overall) and Sheila. Charlotte finished 2nd in hers, and Alexis completed her very first race. Way to go, everyone!

Also, waaaaay too much good food was eaten.

I'm looking forward to hearing about Scotia, and the Bruce Trail hike, and the ALS Walk in London. Please write me the news, and post your pictures on the blog. (Don't forget, you can download pix from there, too.)

For those few training for the Toronto Half, the distance is 10K. Naturally, you can decide your own. How about it? Will anyone be out on Monday?

Wednesday 24 September 2008

Walks: September 27 & 28th

Ta da! Here we are. Last walk before the race(s) on Wednesday, and we did great. Special thanks to the valiant few who did 11K when they didn't have to.

As we have such a large number away at events this weekend, please do sign in to say if you'll be coming to Tim's for the Saturday walk, which starts at 8 am -- you can pick your distance.

Good luck to Maria at the ALS Walk in London this Saturday! And happy trails to the two who are braving that two-day, 50K hike this weekend. You know who you are!

For the Scotiabank Waterfront Half:

To Olwyn, Cheryl, Leverne, Lynne, Libby, Barb and Breda -- and to Michelle's daughter Suzanne doing her first big race -- we wish you a great time at Scotia on Sunday. Enjoy the waterfront, cheer those Kenyans, do your thing, and have fun.

For the Kitchener-Waterloo Walking Classic 10K:

To the Lucky 13 doing this first walkers-only race, we'll see some of you for dinner at 6 pm on Saturday at Peter Martin's 20 King Restaurant which (oddly) is located at 41 King St W.

On race morning, see you in the lobby of the Delta Inn at 105 King E at 8:15 am. According to Trish, it's .48K from the hotel to the race start, so that gives us a little time for packet exchange and bathroom breaks before the race begins. If you miss us there, see you at City Hall before the race. It looks like there are only about 150 registered in the 10K and about 120 in the 5K, so we probably won't get lost in the crowds.

Bruncheon buffet starts at whenever we're finished the race (or a time to be confirmed by Cynthia) at Boa Nova Rodizio Grill House, 6 Charles St W.

And in-keeping with the egalitarian nature of this blog:

I would like to wish myself a very happy birthday on Sunday. It already sounds like it will be wonderful: perfect walking weather, good friends, good food, brand new medal. Who could ask for more to celebrate? Cheers, everyone!

Monday 22 September 2008

Walk: Wed. Sept. 24 @ Shoppers

Wednesday, the Scotia group has a manageable 5K, while the Toronto group enjoys (notice that verb) a delightful 11K. I'm hoping there'll be at least one besides me in the latter bunch, as Bob has to do his 11K at another time.

For this weekend's brunch dates: Sounds like Leverne has everything organized for the Scotia post-race get-together. For our Kitchener gang, Bob has just booked a table for 12 under his name at the Delta, starting at 10:45. So we're all set!

Today's image is a little reminder to make ourselves as visible as possible when we're on the road at night: wearing light colours, reflective surfaces, and twinkle lights. It may be the only time when "lighting up" is good for our health.

Saturday 20 September 2008

Walk: Mon. Sept. 22 @ Loblaws

Peace, says Jan! Yes, it comes to some of you... if you're on the training taper. That's why the Scotia crowd can rest easy with a great, big 6K. Actually, the Toronto Halfers aren't too bad on Monday either, with 8K. See you in our usual spot at 7 pm -- and don't forget to dress for the dark.

A few bits and pieces:

Walk for ALS

Maria won't be joining us in either of next weekend's races, because she's going to London, Ontario to walk on Saturday for ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease, which claimed the life of her cousin's husband Herman in March 2008. Here's Maria's story:

Herman’s wife is my first cousin. Since I have no siblings, I grew up very closely to all my cousins. Herman was diagnosed in Mar ’07 and passed-on almost a year to the day. One of his daughters rushed her wedding day because of his rapid deterioration. She wanted him to be able to walk her down the aisle, which he did. During the father-daughter dance, there was not a dry eye in the room. He fought a very courageous battle. It is a terrible disease with absolutely no cure, and that is why I am doing this walk.

Good luck, Maria. If you would like to sponsor Team Herman, you can do so through this link.

Scotiabank – Myra's Marathon

Some of you might remember Myra from Alfie Shrubb -- she has been doing a half marathon in every province and territory this year to celebrate her 65th birthday and raise funds for the CNIB Library. You can read more about Myra's journey (or contribute) through the link on her name above.

Scotia will be her culminating event. Lee Scott, who has been Myra's guide a few times, wrote specifically about the Scotia plans recently in her blog. (Take my word, there's more than one reason to click this link.) If you're doing Scotia anyway, you might be able to help Myra spread awareness by wearing a back bib. Keep your eyes open for Myra, Lee and the Wow crew.

Getting ready for our races

Need a reminder of how to prepare for our big events? Have a quick read through this post from the spring: Don't Sweat the Chilly. Most of the content still applies, but hydration is especially important as the temps go up. This summer's weather has been so unpredictable, why should fall be any different?

And wishing you a happy birthday

Hey, Niki, have a great day on Sunday -- the last day of Summer 2008. Fall officially begins this year on Monday, September 22nd. See some of you then.

Wednesday 17 September 2008

Walk: Sat. Sept. 20 @ Tim's

Scotia friends, you have put in your distance and now you deserve a break. It's Taper Time! Guess what? You win 8K (and 6K and 5K next week)! Enjoy. You've earned it. (Meanwhile, the Toronto crew falls back to 11K before their last big push.)

In celebration, the group will return to an 8 am start. The handful of people still with extra-long walks to go before the Toronto Half will have the option to start earlier.

Don't forget to review the choices and dates in that monster message of last weekend. Plus, new links are always being added to our blog, so check them out. I came across a cute race in January, for instance: the Robbie Burns 8K. Next year would be the poet's 250th birthday (they age well in Scotland it seems), and if you sign up by December, you score a set of tartan pyjamas. How can we resist? Perhaps we'll find out what runners wear under their kilts...

See you Saturday at 8 am.

Tuesday 16 September 2008

Walk: Wed. Sept. 17 @ Shoppers

Short but sweet today, to compensate for my tome on the weekend: Scotia folks, you're at 8K (look at the 8K (B) route); Toronto crew is 13K (we'll tweak the posted 13K route slightly to pair up with the Scotia walkers at the beginning).

Everyone else, c'mon out anyway -- there's sure to be a route for you. See you at 7 pm.

Saturday 13 September 2008

Walk: Mon. Sept. 15 @ Loblaws

Well, we managed to dodge the rain. Yay! But wasn't it like walking through soup -- cool soup, but a thick, gourmet soup nonetheless.

After Saturday's 16 & 18K walks, or after the races ahead, you just might be in the mood for a relaxing bath. Sharp-eyed Julaine passes along this tip about discounts (in September) on a series of herbal soaks from Noah's Natural Foods on Yonge Street. Here are a few:

Rich in essential oil, Lavender Bath calms nervous tension and promotes sound sleep. Rosemary Bath warms and revitalizes the body, improving circulation. Sage Bath is recommended for refreshing and revitalizing tired, swollen feet.

Sounds good, Julaine. Can someone wave a magic wand to make them appear right now?

Or, if you're looking for another way to restore serenity, don't forget that you can drop in or sign up for Norma's Yoga Classes, Tuesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at Kingston Road United Church.

Now, down to business. There's a lot of stuff to communicate this week, so please bear with me.

On Monday:

Both groups walk 8K. Be your own coach and do some of those metres at interval pace. After our warm-up, try three blocks fast/three slow. We might hate it now, but we'll be glad we've done it when we see how strong it makes us.

Upcoming social events:

• Jan is hoping to organize a movie night for Sing-along Mamma Mia; date and location TBD but let her know if you're interested

• Our Shore Things Year-End Party is November 8th at Margy & Rainer's (Marg, you did know about this, right?) -- so, mark your calendars! It will be a true pot-luck, and a great night for looking back at our accomplishments and looking forward to the year ahead.

• Bob's new band The Nerve plays the Black Swan on Danforth on November 22nd -- more details soon.

Upcoming races:

There's time yet to sign up for the Sept. 28th Kitchener Waterloo Walking Classic 10K. It's the inaugural event for what they're calling the only all-walker race in Canada. We'll be checking it out because next year they're thinking of adding Canada's only walkers-only half marathon.

Alternatively, if you've been keeping up with the training, you might consider the Scotia Half on the 28th. Please note the new start and finish location this year, both at City Hall.

I'm hoping to drum up more company for the Toronto Half Marathon Walk, Oct. 19th, because I'm registered with some of our speedsters, and know how often I've seen their fleet feet fly away over the horizon.

If you preferred lion around, however, and gnu you wanted a shorter race, the Toronto Zoo Run, which Olwyn has done, is on the day before.

Don't delay if want to do the Toronto Women's Half Marathon next May. The Half has only 1,000 places, and this one seems to have struck a chord with the community. It's early days, but about 150 women are already registered. Perhaps this could be our mother/daughter or sister/sister event? Michelle checked with the organizers and, while there's no walker category, walkers are encouraged to join. Still, will we care about categories after we hit that 19K chocolate station? I'm just saying....

If you can believe it, it's time to think about the Resolution Run/Walk 5K, which this year is on Sunday, December 28th. Registration is $40 till October 1, and you'll recall that this is a capped event: only 500, so sign up early to avoid disappointment. There's always a "gift with registration" and in 2008 the event giveaway is a jacket with zip-off sleeves. Need one?

You have till Nov. 6th to sign up for the Santa Shuffle. No loot, but a low fee and a worthy cause. And, speaking of causes, see some of you Sunday for Terry Fox.

P.S. Seems I was misinformed about the Marathon du Medoc 2009 -- it isn't sold out. Here's what it says on their website:

REGISTRATIONS 2009 Marathon Magnum (Blaye-Médoc)

The 25th marathon will take place on 12 September 2009. The theme will be "THE CIRCUS." To take part, you can visit our website www.marathondumedoc.com from 15 September 2008 and leave us your e-mail address to be informed when registrations open in early January 2009.

So check their website on Monday and let them know if you're interested.

Phew! I think that's it. Hope I didn't forget anything. But, to borrow from Roseanne Roseannadanna, "There's always something."

Friday 12 September 2008

Walk: Sun. Sept. 14 for Terry Fox

They say the Inuit have 500 words for snow. In 2008, we had plenty of chances to learn many words for rain. You might have created some of your own; probably unpublishable. Here are some useful ones from the Environment Canada glossary posted on our blog:

In Environment Canada reports, the term "rain", used alone, means liquid precipitation of significant duration and extent. Rain showers stop and start suddenly and vary widely in intensity, and are gone in less than an hour. Intermittent rain stops and starts repeatedly, although not as abruptly or as frequently as showers. In drizzle, the droplets are fine and minute--much smaller than in rain--and appear to float in the air.

However, on Sunday: Don't let a little precipitation deter you from a walk around "the peanut" for Terry Fox -- the reason I'm posting this now. If it's too wet for the Island, and it looks as if it will be, the Beach walk starts at the change rooms/bathing station (register from 8:15; walk from 9 am to 1 pm). You can do 5K or 10K for a good cause.

Let us know if you'll be there.

Thursday 11 September 2008

Toronto Women's Half/5K, May 31, 2009

Well, here's something to talk about on the route tomorrow: the first-ever Toronto Women's Half Marathon, on May 31st, 2009. I didn't think anything might lure me away from Alfie Shrubb, which is on the same day next year, but this might be it. Here's what they say about it:

Join over 1,000 women in a celebration of health, fitness and camaraderie in the Toronto Women's Half Marathon & 5k. Run by or linger at the 19k chocolate station. Grab a drink at the Firefighter's Water Station. Enjoy the post run party – great food, free massage and lots more.

Guys are welcome to participate, but they don't qualify for prizes. The site doesn't yet give the time requirements, but it is live and ready for registering -- and there's a cap of 1,000. Funds raised go to pediatric oncology. What do you say, gals? First fee increase happens Nov. 30th.
