Walk: Sat. Feb. 27 @ Tim's

As February draws to a close, the season can't make its mind up about the weather. Hope it won't come to extremes -- though we've certainly "weathered" those before. Some of our Shore Things are scheduled for long distances for the Chilly Half and Around the Bay. Let's come out to join them in spirit.

Saturday's distance is 11K – or the feat of your choosing. See you at 8 am, dressed for the weather, whatever the weather, whether we like it or not.

Monday 22 February 2010

Walks: Mon. Feb 22 & Wed. Feb. 24

Do you see that foreign white matter that Lou-Ann and Dawn found at the top of a hill in High Park. It's called snow... and we're about to get our first real winter dose of it. Or so they say.

Tonight at Loblaws, and Wednesday at Shoppers. On both days, we're going to kick it up a wee bit with 8K, wicked weather permitting. On Wednesday, we might even throw in a couple of hills. You know you need it!

Please sign in to let your walking partners know whether or not you're a fair-weather friend...

Walk: Sat. Feb. 20 @ Tim's

Mea culpa. I mis-read last week's schedule. So you know that 10K we did last Saturday? Let's do it all again this week! Of course, you can opt for a shorter distance. See you at 8 am at our beloved Temple of Coffee.

Here you have a shot of four of the eight Shore Things who are doing full marathons in 2010 – in Reykjavik and Chicago. We'll have a lot of ground under our feet and a great deal to celebrate come November. Happy trails, folks.

Walk: Wed. Feb. 17 @ Shoppers

What does the romantic walker get their Valentine? Seems like a 5K race and a chocolate heart medal!

If you aren't going to Doc Soup, you can hear all about it this Wednesday at Shopper's. The distance remains 6K, the time 7 pm. Please sign in to say if you're coming, as most of our regulars will be in movie mode.

Walks: Sat. Feb. 13 @ Tim's & Family Day

This time last year, it looks like we didn't have much snow, either. Hope you'll join me on Saturday for a heart-y 8K to 10K, starting at 8 am. Yes, it's time to start training seriously for those spring half marathons (and burning off extra calories to make room for Valentine chocolates!)

Speaking of which, a happy birthday advance to our Valentine girl, Dawn H. We heart you!

Now, an early-start proposal for Monday's walk on Family Day: 9:30 am from Loblaws – or an alternative coffee stop. 6K; hills optional. Sign in with your preference.

Monday 8 February 2010

Walks: Mon. Feb. 8 & Wed. Feb. 10

While some of us were gathering at Tim's and some were enjoying the hills and dales of High Park, Rainer was off to Sarnia to take first place for the walkers in the Hypothermic Half. A great finish time, Rainer: 2:46:15.

Speaking of hypothermic, it's a bundle-up week here in T.O. Be sure to dress for it. Keep in mind that BodyGlide is useful to protect exposed skin – nice to have something that works double duty.

Both days are 6K days. Sign in here for both days. Enjoy, and be safe!

And wish an early Happy Birthday to Lou-Ann! Button up your overcoat, girl.

Walk: Sat. Feb. 6 @ High Park (Note change of locale!)

On Saturday, which happens to be a special day for our loyal west-ender Barbara (Happy Birthday, girl!), we have the option to join up with the Toronto Power Walkers for a walk in High Park. The location is the Grenadier CafĂ© (a handy place for breakfast afterwards) and the time is 8:30 am – a half hour later than our usual start, as an added inducement.

It's a great way to get to know another group in the walking community. I'm sure they're more punctual about departing than we are, so let's try to be early rather than late. Parking at the restaurant is free, but if you'd prefer a ride, we can offer a seat to up to 4 more people (ETD 8:05 am from our place).

I have vest samples, which I'll bring for you to try on. Hope to see you there.

Those who can't make it to the west end can meet at Tim's as usual at 8 am. Please sign in with your preference.

On a sad note, please join me in sending our sincere condolences to Niki and her family on the sad loss of her mother last Saturday. A memorial will be held in the spring in Ottawa. In the meantime, we'll find out if there's anything we can do. At right is Niki with her amazing mum at a milestone moment during the Ottawa Half Marathon back in 2005.
