Walks: Sa. Jan. 27 to Wed. Jan. 31

With luck, this will be us on Saturday (or Sunday)
Weather the weather be cold, weather the weather be wet... this is what we've been wondering lately. Whether we like it or not. Crossing our fingers for favourable conditions this week.

Saturday at Tim's at 8? Or, if we get rained out, should we regroup on Sunday morning, instead? Please sign in to state your preference.

Ditto for the weekday evening walks. Monday at Loblaws; Wednesday at Occasions; both at 6:30 pm. Weekday morning walks are TBD. No one has let me know whether these are continuing.

To our photographers: Please send me pix for the blog (and calendar)!

Race notes from Libby:

Best wishes to Trish, Cheryl, Anita and Julie for their 8K Robbie Burns Race this Saturday. We hope the weather gods are kind. May the wind be lightly on your backs!

For thioe who may be interested in the Sporting Life 10K, registration fees increase monthly on the 15th of each month. Current cost is a mere $55. It is always a fun downhill race on Mother's Day. Makes you earn your  family Brunch or Dinner!

Best wishes to all our friends who are ailing, healing or travelling. Either way, we hope for happy news.

That's it for now! Sorry for the late posting, but it was one of those weeks.

Walks: Sat. Jan. 20 to Wed. Jan. 24

Oh, the places we've been!
Last Saturday, we once again resorted to the PATH to beat the weather. Let's hope for better things on Saturday, when the forecast looks like it might go above freezing. Unless other things happen, see you at Tim's at 8 am for the walk of your choosing, capped by friendly chat and warming beverages.

Winter weather has also crimped our style for our evening walks. Let's see what next week brings. Theoretically, it's Monday at Loblaws, Wednesday at Occasions. If the weather's bad, we might need to find alternative locations. Please sign in to let others know whether you'll be out. It helps.

Weekday morning walks might be on hold due to a health crisis for organizer Nishe's partner Nigel. More information will be privately shared. If you'd like to host a morning walk, please let me know.

Race notes from Libby:

  • No training schedules yet
  • The Robbie Burns 8K race walking division is sold out with only Trish carrying the flag for Shore Things. It is still a week away so let's hope Trish has good weather.
  • Please check the Race Interests and make sure it is up to date with any races you have registered for!
  • Lynne has commited to the Maritimes Race weekend this fall ...please consider joining her as according to Eileen and Eva, this is a great race!
  • Arlene and I (Libby) have commited to the Summer Solstice Half Marathon in Norway.
  • Even if you have no races in mind, join us in training in the coming months!
  • Hope to see many this Saturday with good weather forecasted at last!

Our thoughts go out to all Shore Things and Shore Things friends who have been sidelined or who are travelling. We wish you the very best!

Shoes and nutrition in one! Who's interested?

Walks: Sat. Jan. 13 to Wed. Jan. 17

I think we'd all rather be with Sharon this week!
Unfortunately, our plan to walk from Dawn's on Saturday has to be cancelled. First, Dawn is now under the weather and can't host (get well soon, Dawn!). Second, the weather is under the weather and is predicted to be even more horrible than it has been – icy, which is the walker's worst friend.

Last week, those who tried it enjoyed walking the PATH downtown. This might be an option for us again. Other suggestions? If the ice is really slick, though, all bets are off. Watch this space and please leave your comments to say where you'll be.

This week is a 15th Anniversary for some of us. On Jan. 16, 2003, we went to our first Jean's Marines information night. And the rest, they say, is history – and the basis for this group. Think of all we've been through together, in every weather, and how we're still walking. Congratulations!

Weekday walks are from the usual places: Monday evening at Loblaws, Wednesday evening at Occasions, morning walks (email Nishe), Sunday mornings at the Running Room. Please do check the comments as the season has made attendance spotty. No one likes to show up to find no walking companions.

It's great that we have so many options. However, it also means we don't see each other and have the chance to bond as a group as often. It's that bonding that has helped the Shore Things thrive and survive for so long. Let's try to drop in on each other from time to time.

Be sure to let Libby know if you've signed up for any races or plan to do an alternative walk challenge in 2018. Check the Interests List in our sidebar to see what others have been tempted by.

For those sidelined or travelling, we send you best wishes. Hope to have you back with us soon.

Note: I'm the blog gal for the next few weeks, so if you have any news or updates to mention please send them to me (Helen). Take care, friends.

Last week, some of us escaped the cold by walking the PATH system.

This is just one of the cool things we found. Any takers for a repeat?

Walks - Saturday January 6 - Wednesday January 10, 2018

Happy New Year to you and yours - may it be a happy, healthy and active one.
This week has me singing the song, Baby, its Cold Outside. I'm getting tired of the song and the cold weather - surely it will end soon.

A few suggestions for you to consider for the weekend walk.

1. Jan suggested option one:
Since it's going to be bitterly cold on Saturday how about meeting at Toronto City Hall parking lot and going via the Path through: Jan - where shall we meet in the parking lot -  it's huge?
  • Sheraton Centre
  • Richmond-Adelaide Centre
  • First Canadian Place
  • TD Centre
  • Royal Bank Plaza
  • Brookfield Place (formerly Bell Canada)
  • Commerce Court
  • Scotia Plaza
  • Hudson Bay
  • Eaton Centre
and back the way we came.  It's only about 4K but it will be warm!  And if we get lost a few times we will add a few kilometres!
There's a Tim's at Queen and Bay or I'm sure we can find something in the Sheraton Centre to meet up at the end - if we can stay underground we can leave coats in the car. What do you think?  Early in the morning there won't be a lot of foot traffic.

Here's a link to the PATH;

2. Option two - switch to Sunday morning for this week - supposed to be less frigid
Meet at Tim's at 8:00 am as usual on Sunday.

3. Option three - meet at Tim's on Saturday at 8:00 am.

Please sign the blog to let others know which option(s) you are doing.

Sunday walkers often meet at the Running Room on Queen St at 8:30 am
Weekday walks are coordinated by Nishe - she'll send an email - let us know if you want to be added to the list.
Evening walks have not been happening in this cold weather but weather permitting, we meet at 6:30 pm at Loblaws (Monday) and Occasions (Wednesday).

Announcements and Information:
from Dawn: Walk on Sat. Jan. 13th from Dawn's place followed by coffee and treats - sounds inviting to me - thanks, Dawn.  A private message will be sent with the details.

from Libby: Congrats to all the the Racers in the Hair of the Dog Race New Year's Day. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and full recovery Norma.

Just a reminder for any race enthusists- Robbie Burns Race Sunday Jan. 28 still has 8 walking spots available- It is only 8K . With luck the weather will be kind and warmer!

from Lee Scott - check out her blog post - excellent tips on walking in frigid weather and a warm up routine that is bound to get you moving and get your heart rate up.
