Walks - Sat. Feb. 1 - Wednesday Feb. 5, 2014 - And Brunch

Robbie Burns Race Prep
Can you name the owners of those toes?

Our walk schedule this week will offer an extra option because of our Shorethings brunch on Sunday.

Saturday morning at 8:00 am (weather permitting) for whatever distance suits you - aiming for 8 - 10 kms?  Please sign the blog to let others know....may not attract many walkers this week on Saturday morning.

Sunday morning - Walk and Brunch:  announcement from Helen & Dawn:
Meet at Helen's place, ready to leave at 9 am on Sunday. Parking available in school across the street. Helen will plan routes for distances, 8-10K, Then off to TKOs, which is just a five-minute walk from Helen's. Bring a change of clothes, if you like.

Brunch at TKO's starts at 10:30 amit's on the north side of Danforth, just east of Coxwell.  Bring a few bucks for the raffle and if you still have donations to add to the raffle, contact Lynne or Leverne as soon as possible.

And bring your appetite!

I understand that the brunch is fully booked - SOLD OUT! Great job, Dawn! Thanks to Dawn and to the Social Committee for organizing this event.

Monday night walk from Loblaws at 7:00 for 6 km  and Wednesday night walk from Shoppers at 7:00 for 6 km.  Please sign in on the blog so others know who to expect. The weather has discouraged many walks in January, but lets get out there starting Feb. 1st.

Announcements:
from Helen:  I understand that Kathleen is/has moved on to Picton, via Ottawa. All the best to you in your new home in the Picton area. We'll miss you.

From Libby and Rainer:  A typically frigid Robbie Burns was well represented both by walkers- 71 in total and by the Shore Things- 11 in total!.
Braving -15 plus a wind chill temperature, we soldiered on. Rainer - of course- blazed through with a chip time of 56:49...fourth male overall and third in his age group! (did you find his toes in the photo above?)  The rest of us were just glad to finish!.
The bagpipes and oatmeal seem to draw us in to the cold race ! A great social time for those who competed. Congrats to all the finishers!

To Libby: Have a wonderful trip and we look forward to hearing about in March.

more next week....getting too long....

And, after a few glasses of wine (post race, of course)
Hope to see you Saturday and/or Sunday.

Walks - Sunday Jan. 25 - Wednesday Jan 29

Four of our Finest

I feel like I (and perhaps our mayor?) have fallen off the wagon. We have been weather challenged these past few weeks and for some of us that means little walking.  Saturday is a time for redemption, one sole at a time, so join us at Tim's, at 8:00 am, for the distance of your choice....unless, of course, you are training.  If training for the Chilly Half, the distance is a chilly 16 km this weekend.

Monday, from Loblaws, at 7:00 for 6 km. Wednesday, apparently has moved back to Shopper's, at 7 for 6 km. But, if you are training for the Chilly, 8 km is on the training schedule for both week nights. Please sign in so others know of your intentions.

Best wishes to those participating in the Robbie Burns race this weekend. Wear your kilts with pride!

Safe travels to Libby & Greg who are travelling as of next week - have a wonderful time in New Zealand.

Announcements:
from Dawn: - brunch at TKOs is sold out. Thanks for your interest and support. There will be some items for raffle, so bring a bit of change. Thanks to the Social Committee members for organizing the raffle. Proceeds will help replenish our coffers.

from Libby - Race interests welcomed.  Consider this:
Bob and Helen have signed up for the Corning Wineglass Half on October 4th. Libby is seriously considering this as her fall race. It would be nice to try for a contingent going down. It is only a 4- ish hour drive!
See you Saturday.

In the NEWS

This is an extra posting - done only on rare occasions - and for your information only:

Check this out and you will see one of our very own has hit the press!

If for some reason it doesn't open to the article, check Sonia Day's column in Saturday's Star.

Walks - Sat. Jan. 18 - Wed. Jan. 22

Tim's on an icy day

Surely we will have better weather for walking this week!  Last week, some braves souls headed out in very slippery conditions while a few others just enjoyed coffee and conversation.  Distances for this week start to reflect training for the Chilly Half.

We meet on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am. For those doing the Chilly Half, 14 km is your training distance. Any distance that suits the rest of you is just fine. I'll suggest between 6-10 km just to get the conversation started. Come and join us Dianne, so that we can hear about your first marathon - congratulations on your great time.

Week days walks - Daytime walkers connect through Dawn for your Monday and Wednesday outings. Evening walkers (we need a few more people to join us) meet on Monday at Loblaws and Wednesday at Occasions. Both start at 7:00 pm. Usually 6-8 km is just fine. However, those training for the Chilly Half need to do 8 and 10 km during the week. Please sign in on the blog to let others know if you'll be out.

Announcements:
from Libby: Chilly Half - Arlene and Elaine are signed up for this. Anyone else? The training for KW starts February 3rd. Are there other race interests? Please mention your ideas to Libby.
Is anyone else interested in the Edge2Edge in Tofino in June?

from Dawn: Brunch at TKOs is Sunday Feb. 2nd and costs $18 - payable in cash, to Dawn, in advance. She'll be collecting names and cash on Saturday. TKOs does a great spread for us.

Not sure who deserves credit for the photos this week.

See you Saturday.

Walks - Sat. Jan. 11th - Wed. Jan. 15th

Yes, ice is beautiful.....some days...especially on someone else's tree

Now, I've ordered warm (and dampish) weather for Saturday.  We can all hit the pavement (and I don't mean by slipping on the ice), and walk as many kms as is needed to stretch muscles and get a workout....finally. I feel like I've been held captive in my home and office given our weather. Please join us at Tim's on Saturday, won't you?

Mid week walks:
Daytime walkers connect through Dawn and most of you know the routine.
Evening walkers (weather permitting) meet at Loblaws on Monday at 7:00 pm for 6 km. Wednesday, at Occasions, at 7:00pm for 6 km.....or whatever we are able to manage. Sign in on the blog.

Is anyone interested in walking 2014 in 2014?  Let me know....I'll join you.

Announcements
from Dawn - sign up for our Feb. 2 brunch at TKOs and bring your $18 cash on Saturday. Dawn will add your name to the list and take your money. These brunches hit the spot on a wintery Sunday morning, so please join us.  For the hearty souls, there will be a short stroll from Helen & Bob's prior to the brunch - but more on that closer to the 2nd.

From Eileen - tips for walking on ice - we can certainly benefit from a review of this article.

From Libbyremember that the discount cut-off for Canada  Running series is Jan 27th. Check it out here:  https://secure.eventsonlone.ca/events/crs_package_east/

Libby is also collecting a list of races that any of us is entering or entertaining the thought of doing so. Please let Libby know. Once we have an idea of the races, we will post the training schedules so that you will be trained and ready on race day.  Does it get any better than that?

Just to getting you thinking....Some commitment and/or interest has been shown for these races:
KW Classic - May 11  http://www.kwwalkingclassic.com/
Cleveland Rite Aid Half - May 18  http://www.clevelandmarathon.com/We_Run_This_City/

Walks - Sat. Jan. 3 - Wed. Jan. 8

Think warm weather thoughts

Happy New Year and sorry about the lateness of this post.....got a bit sidetracked.

Let's get out walking on Saturday as they are promising milder weather - thank goodness. Meet at Tim's at 8:00 for a few kms. Some people will need to get training for Robbie Burns; some will need to burn a few calories; some will want to join after an absence (we won't ask why you were missing in action); and Dianne will be on taper before heading to Disney next weekend.  Come and walk whatever distance suits you (and the weather).

This first full week of January is begging us to start back to our routine of regular walking, so join in:
Monday night at Loblaws at 7:00 pm for 6 kms.
Wednesday night at Occasions at 7:00 pm for 6 kms.

Monday and Wednesday day time walkers connect with each other or contact Dawn.

Announcements:
Dawn needs to know if you are planning to attend Sunday brunch at TKOs on Feb. 2nd. She needs to have your name on her list and your $18 in cash. Please bring it this week or next week.

Libby would like to know what races you are interested in doing in 2014. We'd like to get a list of possible and definite race ideas so that we can encourage others to register....and then to train together.

Helen sent this information along: The Stellar Runners just circulated this - when to eat protein article
I trust everyone has survived the power outages - I think we all learned a lesson or two during that experience.
