Walks: March 29 & 31

Lovely day for a long walk Saturday. March seems to be going out like a lamb, and the weather for Easter weekend, if it holds, looks spectacular. Like instant summer.

Bob & I have reconsidered our spring half marathon, as other commitments are developing for the weekend for the Waterloo half. We're now registered for the Harry's Spring 5K, April 3rd in High Park (8K is sold out). It's a beautiful place to walk, and a portion of the fees support prostate cancer research.

We're also likely to sign up for the SportingLife 10K – fees go up April 1st, so act quickly if that interests you. Olwyn and Lou-Ann are already registered. Anyone else?

April 1 is also the end of earlybird rates for the Midsummer Night's 15K (& 30K, too) on August 21st, same day as we'll be racing in Iceland. There's an interesting symmetry there! It's the 5th Anniversary of this fun race, which we probably would be doing if we were in Toronto, so I'd encourage you to sign up.

Let's do 8K and 6K on Monday and Wednesday to celebrate. Wednesday's schedule will include a few hills, but we'll aim for variety.

Did you know that we burn twice as many calories when we walk up hill? We're also doing good things for our heart and lungs. And when we challenge ourselves in this way once a week, we're telling our muscles to produce more mitochondria, the organelles that turn glucose and oxygen into energy. More mitochondria means more energy factories at work, so we have greater endurance on our long walks. So it's all a good thing, folks. We start 7ish.

I will be walking tonight, see you at 7:00.
Helen could you switch the training you do on Wednesdays to a Monday every so often (this way I can see what I am missing...oh what a shame)?
Welcome home Dawn!

See you tonight. Looks like a lovely evening for a walk.

Also, I'll be posting on this later today, but tomorrow is the earlybird deadline for a $25 price increase on registration for the KW Walking Classic Half. I'm hoping everyone will be there for that big event, so don't miss this chance to save.
