Walks Saturday Dec. 28 - Wednesday Jan. 1

Enjoy the holidays.  Aren’t we fortunate to have such a great gang of walking buddies?

Join us on Saturday for a walk with friends. We will meet at Tim’s at 8:00 am. Trust me, it will feel good to walk off some of those Christmas calories.

I suspect some will walk on Monday morning - just check the blog comments for details.
And, I have no idea if anyone will walk Wednesday morning. Again, check the blog comment section.

Wishing Trish and Ali all the best for the Vancouver Resolution Run.
Have a great race to anyone who is doing the Hair of the Dog - better weather is promised for this year's race.

This
Christmas
end the quarrel.
Seek out a forgotten
friend. Dismiss suspicion,
and replace it with trust.
Write a love letter. Share some
treasure. Give a soft answer. Keep
a promise. Find the time. Forgo a grudge.
Forgive an enemy. Listen. Apologize if you
are wrong. Try to understand. Examine your
demands on others. Think first of someone else.
Be Kind; be gentle. Appreciate. Laugh a little. Laugh a
little more. Express your gratitude. Gladden the heart of a
child. Welcome a stranger. Take pleasure in the beauty and the
Wonder of Earth.
Speak your love.
Speak it again.
Speak it yet
once again.

Walks - Saturday Dec. 21 - Wednesday Dec. 25

Wishing you and yours the very best this holiday season.  If you are in town, come out and join us on Saturday for a walk with friends. We meet at Tim's at 8:00 am and the distance is reasonable even if the weather isn't. We'd love to see you.

During the week, a Monday morning walk will likely take place. Check the blog comment section for time and meeting place.

If anyone would like to suggest another week day walk during the week, please add your suggestion to the blog comment section. It may generate some interest.

Announcements and information:
from Libby: Just a friendly reminder about the Hair of the Dog race January 1st. Walking distances of 3K.or 9K. Walkers start at 11:30am. Too late for the reduced rate registration but it's only $45. Apparently the lunch and door prizes are definitely worth the effort!

from Eileen: A little bit of history on one of our occasional walking routes.  William Peyton Hubbard was the first black alderman elected in Toronto and did a lot to improve the lives of black residents in the city.  There is a plaque in front of his former home at 660 Broadview. Let's plan a route to this area and check it out soon - perhaps in early January?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Peyton_Hubbard

Thinking of anyone who is ill, injured or missing in action. We hope to see you again soon.

Walks - Saturday Dec. 14 - Wednesday Dec. 18

ho ho ho

Join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am.....might be a tad brisk....consider yourself warned. I know life can get busy but walking weekly with friends adds richness to your life.....just saying....

Other options:
Wednesday walks from Tim's are coordinated by Charlotte via email - 9:00 or 9:30 start.
Monday morning and Wednesday morning walks (generally starting around 8:00 am) are announced on the comment section of the blog.

Announcements / Information:
1.  Some good information about walking in icy conditions - walk like a penguin - worth a read:

2. Just a reminder of upcoming Races you may wish to consider.
Hair of the Dog - Jan 1 is always a fun local race- weather dependent. And they have great door prizes!
Robbie Burns 8K in January
Zoo Race in February (part of the Canada Running series).

As always, please let Libby know if you have races of interest and if you have signed up.

Angels Among Us

Thursday 5 December 2019

Walks - Saturday Dec. 7 - Wednesday Dec. 11

Refreshments at Tim's

Eileen has spoken:
Pull out your reindeer antlers, elf hats, Santa touques or flashing headbands.  Bring your accessories this Saturday December 7th for a group photo after your walk. She has a few Santa hats if you can’t find yours so no need to feel left out 😊. She's doing the photo early this year to catch as many people as possible before they go away.  Unfortunately she'll have to find someone who can photoshop Margy and Reiner into the photo as they will be off to their winter retreat down south.

Join us at Tim's at 8:00 am on Saturday for a walk with friends who will be wearing their finery. Bob and Helen need to walk 12 km on Saturday in order to complete the virtual walk that they entered. Anyone interested in joining them? They'd love the company.

During the week, some folks walk Monday and Wednesday mornings (8:00 am ish) - check the blog comment section for details (which tend to evolve each week). Others walk Wednesday morning at 9:00 am, meeting at Tim's. Charlotte sends the confirming email. Lots of options so join in.

Announcements and Information:
Sadly, Bob's dad died earlier this week - not entirely unexpectedly but suddenly. Bob returned to Quebec to manage the details. Our thoughts are with you and your family, Bob. Bob expects to return later on Friday. There may be more information from Bob & Helen in the days ahead...

Tannenbaum Racers - Kim, David and Norma were going to do the Tannenbaum 10K last Sunday but high winds and freezing ice pellets made for treacherous and unpleasant conditions. You know who was especially a reluctant starter. David crossed the start line just to say he did. Instead, they had a lovely breakfast at the Beacher Cafe.

Dome at Monarch Park - According to Helen, the track at the Dome is open and free for seniors on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, between 8 - 10 am. She checked it out and they didn't ask for ID. So some of us can be legit and others can be “very youthful” seniors. For those who haven’t been there, they have lockers for outerwear. Or you can stash your stuff on the floor in the main dome. Was rather slippery, according to Jan. Price is right! Might be an option used with caution.

Whose under there?

Walks - Saturday Nov. 30 - Wednesday Dec. 4

The last walk of November is here - you won't want to miss it. So bundle up and join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am. Distance is flexible - whatever works for you. If you have been missing in action, we'd love to see you again. Come now while the distances are quite manageable and the folks are friendly.

Week day walks: Wednesday at 9:00 am at Tim's - Charlotte sends an organizing email. Another group usually walks Monday and Wednesday mornings. Check the blog comments for location and time of these walks as they tend to vary.

Announcements and Information:
Our swim party host, Paul, is recovering from hip surgery. Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery, Paul. I hope your live-in nurse is good to you. Given the litigious environment in which we live, I don't think it is wise to use the term "pool boy".

from Libby & Susan:
The Canada Running series is now open for registration for the Oasis Zoo Run and Scotia Waterfront 10K. Scotia Waterfront is extremely popular and sold out in a week last year. If you are interested, sign up quickly. It has a walking category and great loot bag. Talk it up - others may be tempted to join in.

Best of luck to the Tannenbaum Racers this Sunday. Our wish for you; good weather and a great race.

Hair of the Dog on Jan. 1/2020 offers two distances: 9 or 3 k - along Martin Goodman trail. Hot lunch served - supports Balmy Beach Canoe Club. It is always nice to support local causes and races. A warning: watch out for ice - just ask Norma about it.

Article of interest - talks about the benefits of high intensity (or pushing yourself for short periods of time when exercising). Well worth a read - motivation to work hard.
https://www.everythingzoomer.com/general/2019/11/18/how-high-intensity-interval-training-may-help-stave-off-dementia/

Some folks run for beer, I hear.

Walks - Saturday Nov. 23 - Wednesday Nov. 27

Join us on Saturday, at Tim's, at 8:00 am for a walk followed by coffee with friends. Looking forward to seeing you then. I wondered if our route might include the intersection of Queen St east & Logan so that we could check out the new plaque which recognizes Leslieville's connection to the underground railroad. Check the link below.
https://www.toronto.com/news-story/9730387-plaque-recognizes-leslieville-s-connection-to-underground-railroad/

Mid week walks include Wednesday morning from Tim's at 9:00 am. Charlotte sends an organizing email - thank you, Charlotte. Monday and Wednesday gang usually posts the meeting spot and time of their walks in the comment section - so check there and let them know if you plan to join in. This group is shifting their focus to morning walks.

Anyone signing up for the Tannenbaum 10 K? Please let Libby know.

Remember that this is your blog - if you have any information or announcements regarding walking, please send them to me so that I can include them.

Enjoying the Year End Party

What a great evening that was! Thanks to Trish for hosting and to all who helped with setting up and cleaning up. Great way to celebrate another year together. And thanks to all who contribute to our group - your efforts are greatly appreciated. Lastly, we missed a few of you - wasn't quite the same with you...

Join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am. We will do more or less distance, depending on the weather. Let me remind you, if you have been missing in action, this is the perfect time to rejoin the group on Saturday mornings. The distance, the pace and the company are all reasonable. We'll be looking for you.

Mid week options:
Wednesday morning at 9:00 am at Tim's. Charlotte sends a confirming email prior to the walk.
The Monday and Wednesday group (morning and/or evening) usually post in the comment section to let others know the time and meeting place - check those comments and join in.

Ideas for 2020 - these are just to get us thinking:
Hike the Bruce Trail - at least some sections of it
A Rock & Roll race in Cleveland, Nashville and/or New Orleans (very tempting)
Robbie Burns
Mud Cats races in Dunnville
Hike the Prince Edward County trail over 2-3 days (about 54 km long)
Mississauga Half Marathon
Ottawa Half Marathon
Sporting Life - always fun
Tanenbaum (held in the Beaches)
Registration for some of these races/events is open now. Check them out.
Other ideas go here .......

from Libby - keep Libby informed of your race plans. She will update the training schedule to include your event.

Any interest in a half marathon in 2020? Trish was flashing her Vegas Rock & Roll half race shirt - looked pretty tempting.......just saying.....

Wednesday Walks

Join us on Saturday, at Tim's, at 8:00 am, for a walk with friends. Any distance is good distance - but be sure to pick up the pace - see article below. Last week, a few folks walked in the Port Union area - a nice walk and change of scenery, I understand. Thanks to Sharon for the suggestion.

Year End Party is Sat. Nov. 9 - RSVP required. Check your email for details.

A new study suggests that slow walkers may age quicker than fast walkers — and you're born one or the other. There's bad news for slow walkers. Walking speed isn't actually a preference - a Duke University study found that you're pretty much born a slow or fast walker. Your walking speed as a 45-year-old can show the state of your physical and cognitive aging. According to the study, spanning 40 years, slow walkers had "older" brains, and were more likely to have "accelerated physical aging." - source: Apple News.

Congratulations, Olwyn

Fancy pants Olwyn sent this update from the Scotia race which took place last Sunday:
"it was a perfect day weather-wise!  Ruth passed me in a cloud of dust at about the 4th km,
and I never saw her again! The medal is super sparkly!"

Congratulations to both Ruth and Olwyn for completing the Scotia Half. Ruth finished at 2:55 and Olwyn at 3:21. Well done. Marathon records were achieved in both women's and men's categories.

Join us on Saturday, at Tim's, at 8:00 am for a walk with friends with coffee afterwards. Log in and sign in.

Mid week walks: Wednesday mornings at 9:00 am at Tim's - Charlotte sends a confirming email to help coordinate.

Walks - Saturday Oct. 19 - Wednesday Oct. 23

Really ....

Remember this (not sure where this quote comes from):
A group of friends is greater than the sum of its parts  What you can accomplish together, is more than you can accomplish individually combined! Revel in your community, and share your strength with others.

So join us on Saturday, whatever the weather, for a walk with friends. We gather at Tim's, ready to leave by 8:00 am.

Ruth and Olwyn are our racers this weekend in the Scotia Half. We wish them great weather and lots of support along the route. Enjoy ladies!

Weekly walks:
Usually a group meets on Wednesday morning at Tim's at 9:00 am. Charlotte will send a confirming email.
I am not sure if there is still a group of walkers who meet Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm. Please sign in if you are walking.

Announcements:
Robbie Burns (Jan 19, 2020) sign up is now open. Ruth has already committed and I am sure she would love company. Walking category sells out quickly so sign up soon!

Time to start thinking of races of interest next year. Anyone up to a marathon in 2020? I have heard rumours of a few ready to tackle one more!! As always, let Libby know when you sign up for a race.

My thanks to Helen for doing the blog for the past few weeks. Greatly appreciated.

See you Saturday.

Shore Things Towel

Thursday 10 October 2019

Walks: Sat. Oct. 12 to Wed. Oct. 16

A chilly start to the race – but no rain till we finished!
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! For a while, it looked like we might get dumped on by rain clouds on Saturday, but the forecast isn't quite so dire at the moment. Do come out if you feel like company for a companionable walk.

Often on a holiday Monday, we meet in the morning – shall we say 9 am? If you want an earlier start, please sign in to say when.

Race news from Libby:

Our last race  training note for the Scotia crew! Saturday distance a mere 12K with 10 and 8 K during the week.

Many congratulations to our stellar racers last weekend:

Ruth placed 12th overall in a strong walker catagory in the final Run for the Toad 12.5K. Well done Ruth!

The Corning Racers did us proud with strong finishes for all! Bob 2:42, Lyndia 3.08, Leverne and Helen 3:13, Jan 3:16, and Kim 3:27.

Remember to sign up for either Tannebaum 10K (Dec. 1) or Resolution Run (Dec. 29) before the price increases. Put your thinking caps on for any races next year. Anyone interested in a marathon???

An addendum from Helen: Our year-end party is fast approaching – so start thinking of races to discuss. Do we want to do calendars again this year? I'll send out an email to ask for orders soon.

No dragging necessary, Kim!

Thursday 3 October 2019

Walks: Sat. Oct. 5 to Wed. Oct. 9

Well, Rainer did convince people to join him at Cavan Hills.
Just not the Shore Things! Yay, Stellar Runners. Maybe us next year?
It's race weekend for the Corning crew! Please wish away the rain for us – we're counting on you. For the Scotia trainees, it's 16K on Saturday, followed by 10K and 10K. In the home stretch now.

Everyone else, come out and have fun. Saturday looks perfect for a friendly walk. On Wednesday morning, check with Charlotte in case you'd like to join the group at 9 am.

Ruth offers a race suggestion for later this year – The Tannenbaum 10K on Dec. 1st, because:

(1)    It’s only 10K
(2)    It’s in our neighborhood
(3)    The race actually makes money for a good cause (Centre 55), rather than the fee all ending up in someone’s pockets

Registration fee of $65 gets you a hat and gloves, but the fee bumps up to the next level at the end of October. Will you give it a try?

That's it from me. I have one more week before Susan returns, so send your pics and ideas my way.

Shore Things, doing our bit to help the planet.

Thursday 26 September 2019

Walks: Sat. Sep. 28 to Wed. Oct. 2

Divas Deanna and Viv "shorely" rule
Congratulations to our Shore Things racers! You've done us proud. Looking forward to seeing all your bling – remember to wear it for our Shore Things year-end party on Saturday, November 9th. Trish has confirmed that it will be in her party room, so mark your calendars.

This week, it's taper mode for the Corning crew: 12K, 10K and 8K. Due to their weekend schedules, they've decided to shift their walk to Friday morning at 7:30 am from Helen's. They'll also walk in the mornings on Monday and Wednesday, but exact times and places are TBD.

I haven't heard how the Scotia racers want to handle their 20K, with 8K and 8K to follow. Please share the news in the comments.

Everyone else, come out on Saturday and do your thing! Sign in to declare your times and distance. We all walk more contentedly in a bunch.

Also on Wednesday mornings, remember to let Charlotte know if you'd like to join the 9 am walk. I believe it's from our usual Tim's, but she'll correct me if I'm wrong.

This is Helen, filling in for Susan for a few weeks. Please contact me if you have anything to add to next week's post.

Happy trails!

Ottawa road warriors, Trish, Julie, Cheryl and Anita.
