Walks - Saturday Dec. 29 - Wednesday Jan. 2

Happy Holidays

Well, here we are planning the final walks of 2018 - hard to believe. Join us for the walk, the talk and the coffee on Saturday, at Tim's at 8:00 am. The distance is whatever suits you and the weather.

Sunday walkers meet at the Running Room at 8:30 am - Consider joining in.

Monday 9:00 AM - if anyone is interested in walking on Monday morning, let's meet at Tim's (Lakeshore). I'm not sure if folks are interested in Monday's walk so please sign in and let others know.

Wednesday walkers will meet at Tim's at 9:00 am. Again, please sign in and join in.

The schedule is a little hit and miss with the holidays.....with many folks travelling .... and others who are busy entertaining family and friends.  Soon we will be back to our regularly scheduled walks. Bear with us.

If you have been missing in action, this is the perfect time to step back into action. We are looking forward to seeing you again.

Now that 2019 is upon us, it is time to get serious about some walking and fitness goals for the year ahead. What motivates you to get up and move? Interested in losing a few pounds? Does a race inspire you to train and travel? Are you interested in a challenge? Want to hike the Bruce Trail, end to end? I read about a gentleman who was celebrating his 100th birthday - he had hiked the Bruce Trail, end to end, twice, during his 80s - WOW - amazing!  What's your plan? Let's get thinking and discussing ways to keep us motivated to move.

Happy New Year - celebrate the end of 2018 and may 2019 be an especially good year for you. ...with lots of adventure and the pleasure of special times with family and friends. I think we have a few folks moving to new accommodations; some will undoubtably travel to interesting places;  we have weddings coming, and perhaps a grandchild or two is expected - life is good. And, as we know, life brings challenges too....

Be safe; keep well; see you Saturday.

Thursday 25 October 2018

Walks - Saturday Oct. 27 - Wednesday Oct. 31

And they're off!

Woo Hoo - congratulations to the Scotia racing crew - making us proud once again. Norma, Margy, Rainer, Olwyn, Cheryl, Arlene and Elaine had very impressive half marathon races. Helen and Bob were happy to complete the 5 km race. And Libby cheered the racers on with frozen hands a clapping. Let's acknowledge their accomplishments first...

Updates - from Rainer: A good day for the Scotia race .... Lots of runners and walkers (6,749) in the 5km. In the half walking section there were 194 entrants, we had a total of 6 Shore Things who all did well.
Margy crossed the finish line first from our group under 3 hours she was 33rd overall. As in previous races Margy broke ahead of Rainer at the finish line to cross ahead of him (no mercy in a race) Norma also broke the 3 hour barrier and Arlene and Elaine were a blistering 3:02:48. Olwyn and Cheryl finished with a very respectable 3:30:00 .... a good day for the Shore Things.

- from Helen:  it was cold but pretty watching the sun rise near Ontario Place where the race started. Helen finished with a “personal worst” for the 5K at 44 minutes. Of course that went double for Bob who chose to stick by her. But it was all worth it for the medal and the t-shirt.

Looking good

He tried to keep up with a couple of fast ladies however at the end was beaten by 3 women (at least it was not a 14 yr old girl) who were simply faster than him. Still he was first male however the Buttertarts were FANTASTIC .... worth the drive. (There is something quite heart warming when a group of women beat Rainer in a race, don't you think?)

from Helen regarding the blog and private Shorething messages:
We have two systems of communication - the blog (for weekly walks) and a private group email which is used for sharing private information (funerals, get-togethers, parties) on an as needed basis. Make sure you are on receiving both.

For the private group email list: Make sure that Helen has your most current email address. If you did not receive last week's funeral announcement, you are not on the list.

If you are not receiving the weekly blog posts, go to the Shorethings blog and subscribe by entering your email address in the field at the top left side and follow the prompts to confirm.

from Olwyn:
A new study brings good news to walkers, and especially to those who favour a brisker pace. The faster you walk, the more you may be prolonging your lifespan, the researchers have found. It's a known fact that walking can help to protect our health and prolong our lives. Walking for as little as 2 hours per week brings down the risk of all-cause mortality. This activity has also been linked with enhanced cognitive abilities and better psychological well-being.
