Walks - Saturday Dec. 30 - Wednesday Jan. 3

Christmas Cheer - Shorethings Style

Join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am. It may be a tad chilly....just saying...but a short quick walk will feel good.  Added bonus, sharing coffee with friends.

The regularly scheduled walks may be hit and miss this week given the holidays and the cold. Please sign in on the blog.
Sunday walkers meet at the Running Room on Queen Street at 8:30 am.

Mid week day time (usually Thursday) walks are organized by Nishe - let her/me know if you want to be added to the list.

Evening walks at 6:30 pm are Monday (Loblaws) and Wednesday (Occasions). Given that New Year's Day is Monday, I suspect that there will be little interest in walking - helps to be able to check the blog.

I hope that you are enjoying the holiday season. Several folks are travelling - be safe; enjoy; bring back stories and photos to share. If you are injured, ill or recovering, please take care; we miss you and wish you well.

The New Year is a great time to set some realistic walking goals. Consider a race; consider a challenge; consider a trip and race combination (I've heard Norway mentioned a few times recently); find something that will keep you motivated and active. It keeps us young at heart.

Announcements from Dawn: Saturday Jan 13th, Dawn is hosting the walk from her place followed by coffee and eats - always a great way to start a Saturday. Details to follow in a private message - closer to the date. Looking forward to that......thanks Dawn.

Thanks to Eileen and Olwyn (and others) for a fabulous collection of photos this year - greatly appreciated. Loved the seasonal photo shoot idea, Eileen.

Happy New Year - let's get outside and walk.

Thursday 21 December 2017

Walks - Saturday December 23 - Wednesday December 27

Fairy House in Kew Gardens - loved by kids

Happy Holidays to all - enjoy whatever it is that you celebrate - I hope it is a wonderful end to 2017.

Join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am. We will have a photo shoot at 8:00 am (we must humour Eileen) and then head out. Please wear your Christmas themed gear - she is our very own Ms. Dress Up. I think Eileen will have a few extra Santa hats (or some such thing) for those of us in need.

The distance on Saturday is whatever suits you - come and burn off some calories before settling in for turkey, turkey and more turkey.

As for the rest of the week, I suspect it will be a bit hit and miss. Usually Sunday walkers meet at 8:30 am at the Running Room - not sure if it is an option on December 24 or not?

Monday walks are cancelled - call it an executive decision made without consultation.

Wednesday walk - two possible options - please sign in on the blog so others will know- it helps:
1. meet at Tim's 2 at 9:00 am
2. meet at Occasions at 6:30 pm

Several folks are travelling to visit family and friends or to a vacation destination - I hope that everyone travels safely and enjoys their get-aways. And, to anyone who is ill or injured, we send you healing hugs and best wishes.

What a wonderful group of people - thanks for being such loyal friends and walkers.

Join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am for a walk and talk with friends. It might be a tad nippy and slippery, so come prepared. Remember, it is all about the gear. The distance is yours to choose. The conversation and the coffee will be warm and welcoming.

Friday 1 December 2017

Walks - Saturday Dec. 2 - Wednesday Dec. 6

Join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am.  This is a great time to get out and walk - especially if you haven't been out for a while - distance is yours to determine. Speed doesn't matter as long as you get your heart rate up. Coffee with friends is your reward.

Sunday walkers meet at the Running Room on Queen Street at 8:30 am.
Mid week day time walk leaves from Nishe's at 900 am. Let us know if you want to be included in the organizing email with confirming location.
Mid week evening walks at 6:30 pm are Monday (Loblaws) and Wednesday (Occasions).
Sign up and join in.

Announcements:  from Libby - Rumour has it that Ruth has registered for the Hair of Dog with plans to beat Rainer... Rainer and Margy may be out of town this year which really increases a chance of victory for Ruth!.  Any others signing up? This is a great local race with a walking division and great lunch to kick off the New Year on January 1. Price increase December 15.  www.balmybeachcanoe/index.html

Anyone interested in races please let Libby know!

from Susan:  Any interest in a challenge for 2018? Any ideas for a challenge? Let's start a conversation to see if there are any ideas that appeal:
1. Hike 1 or 2 sections of the Bruce Trail during 2018 - there are 9 sections; each one varies in distance. Easy to arrange; beautiful hikes; can be done when the Bruce Trail offers end to end hikes (the club helps with the transportation). Best done in spring and fall.

2.  Amerithon - is a virtual walk across USA; can be done in teams or individually; can include distances done by walking, hiking, running, biking, swimming - you make the rules; form your own team; no time limit to complete the entire route. There is a website which has information. Is an interesting idea with virtual fly over and maps of the USA so you can map your progress.

3. Your ideas go here ....

Our Great Gathering

Join me in thanking Bob and Helen for hosting Our Great Gathering last weekend. It was a wonderful evening with good friends and good food. And, a special thanks to all who contribute to making the Shorethings function - many contribute and we all benefit. Lastly, thanks for coming out and making it a lovely evening.

Join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am. The distance is whatever suits you - the training is done now for the 2017 year so most of us are happy just to get out and move.

Sunday morning walkers gather at the Running Room on Queen St. at 8:30 am.
Mid week evening walks are Monday (Loblaws) and Wednesday (Occasions) - both nights at 6:30 pm. Be sure to sign in on the blog so that others know what your plans are.

Day time walks are organized by Nishe - let us know if you want to be added to the distribution email list for the day and time.

Announcements & Comments from Libby: It was wonderful to see all the medals displayed at our year end party! Congrats to all (there were many) who raced last year.
A special congratulations to Susan- our intrepid blog master who completed  2017 MILES in 2017. What a great achievement and splashy medal. Any takers to join Susan next for next year- 2018 miles in 2018?

Just a few more reminders  for consideration next year:
Ruth, Susan and Libby did the Uxbridge Run for the Diamond. It was a great race with a walking division. Distances of 5, 10 and half marathon- close to home, on a trail and fabulous lunch!!. April 15, 2018. There is actually a draw for a real diamond! lease consider signing up. uxbrigehalfmarathon.ca

Rainer as always recommends Bermuda Triangle in January and Cleveland Rock & Roll in May. Races supporting walkers are always welcome.

Eileen and Eva regaled us with the fabulous bling gained at the Maritime Race Weekend in Halifax in September. A chance to dress up and gain great medals!
Trish and the gang loved Las Vegas Rock and Roll!. A warm race in November

Whatever you passion, consider signing up for a race or two for 2018! Check out races on the blog.

Eileen took some great photos at the Gathering; I'll post several in the weeks ahead.

And one more - just because there are so many good ones...
A few good men

Walks - Saturday Nov. 18 - Wednesday Nov. 22

Congratulations Cheryl, Julie, Trish & Anita

This Saturday's walk will likely be attended by some so let's go over the details:  Meet at Tim's at 8:00 am for any distance that suits you.

As many of you know, the service for Peggy, Stacey's partner, is scheduled for Saturday at 10:00 am. I am guessing that some folks will walk; some will attend the service; and some may do both.

To Stacey - we send you hugs and our condolences - thinking of you and your family. If this link works, it is a loving tribute to Peggy and a call to action - we better listen up:
http://v1.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/Deaths.20171116.93395355/BDAStory/BDA/deaths

Mid week day time walks - let us know (on the blog or email) if you want to be added to the Thursday day time walkers' email list.

Wednesday at Occasions at 6:30 pm.  Mid week walks are a great way to get out and move; we don't tend to go far, especially as the evenings get colder. Love to have you join us.

Announcements: The annual Shore Things Year End Great Gathering is on Saturday at 6:00 pm. Please wear your medals; bring your recommendations for races during 2018; bring any ideas you have for a challenge for 2018 - all meant to inspire us and keep us active.

Walks - Saturday Nov. 11 - Wednesday Nov. 15, 2017

Champions: our very own Libby; our very own flag - together at NYC finish line

Join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am. It may be a bit chilly but the coffee and the friends are warm and welcoming.  The distance is flexible - you choose.  And, because it is Remembrance Day, several of us will want to finish and get to a service to remember and honour our veterans.

Sunday walkers meet at the Running Room at 8:30 am.
Mid week walkers meet Monday (7:00 pm) at Loblaws; Wednesday (6:30 pm) Occasions.

Trish, Cheryl, Anita and Julie are headed to LV for their race. Make us proud - best wishes for a great race, good weather and a fun get-away weekend. We hope that your training will pay off and that your knees (bodies) will be pain free.

Libby and Susan completed the NYC marathon last Sunday in the drizzling rain....along with 50,000 of their closest friends. Libby's daughter, Fiona, surprised her by appearing in the cheering crowd along the route. What a sweetheart. Just a little confession between you and me:  it was a tad on the tough side.

To Margy: we're thinking of you and sending hugs your way. So sorry to hear about your loss.

Announcements:
1. from Eileen: Day time walks on Thursday at 9:00 am - a small but keen group meets at Nishe's house - Nishe sends an organizing email message - let her (or sign on the blog to request more info) know if you want to be added to the email list.

2. Helen has sent two separate messages.
a) let her know if you'd like to order a calendar.
b) please confirm your attendance for the Shore Things year end party.

3. from Libby:  A reminder to start thinking about races of interest next year. Perhaps we will discuss at the year end pot luck next Saturday. Trish has already committed to Resolution Run in Vancouver and Robbie Burns...way to go Trish.

4. from Libby: Anyone interested in Summer Solstice Half in either Dawson City or Norway, in the midnight sun...just a thought. And, finally Libby is signing off for providing race training info until 2018!  Check out the link below:

Thursday 2 November 2017

Walks - Saturday Nov. 4 - Wednesday Nov. 8

Our day time walkers having too much fun

Join us on Saturday (rain or shine) at Tim's at 8:00 am for a walk with family and friends - really, we're like family!  The distance is up to you - I'll suggest 6 - 10 kms just to get the conversation started. As long as you are out and active, it is all good.

Those training for LV are on taper and scheduled to do 12 km. Trish - take care of that knee - your big race is in two weeks.

Libby and Susan head to New York (such a sacrifice)  for the NYC Marathon. - the largest marathon in the world with 50,000 competitors! Please do a rain dance for them!

Sunday morning walkers meet at Running Room on Queen St., 8:30 am - join in.

Mid week walks remain as follows: Monday (7:00 pm) Loblaws; Wednesday (6:30 pm) Occasions. Join in whenever you are able to do so.

I know that a few folks are recovering from surgery or are ill or injured - best take care and we hope to see you soon.

Announcements:
Time to start thinking about races for next year. Check this link (assuming it works) for some ideas - you may need to copy and paste it:

http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?m=1100969147426&ca=e161409a-a44c-42f4-b397-678dffe9eea9

We already have a few signed up for the Niagara Women's Race, the Shopper's Women's Race and the Diva Race...all in June.

Robbie Burns (a mere 8K) is always a race to kick off the year in January and this week the  Canada Running Serieshas posted their usually early bird specials for Spring Roster, Zoo Race and a few others.

A race or two or three every year keeps us energized and most importantly- walking is great for your health!

Libby assures me that we will talk more about races interest at the yearly pot luck so please bring races of interest to the event.

We could also consider a challenge for 2018 - ideas?

Mid week walks - Monday at 7:00 pm at Loblaws; Wednesday at Occasions at 6:30 pm. Come out and walk - we need more mid-week walkers.

Last Sunday was the Scotiabank race. The Shorethings were well represented. Helen's comments - weather was perfect; all had good results. Bob finished 4th in the walkers overall; Helen was in a brand new age category & placed 3rd. Unfortunately, Trish had to drop out due to knee problems. She’s hoping for better things in Las Vegas. Congratulations to all - well done. Speedy recovery, Trish.

Looking proud of their accomplishment

Walks - Saturday Oct. 21 - Wednesday Oct. 25

Red & White in memory of a great Canadian: Gord Downie RIP

This is race day weekend - best wishes to our Scotiabank folks - there is a very impressive group of Shorethings walking the half marathon including Helen, Bob, Leverne, Jan, Olwyn, Trish, Barb B, Ruth and Cheryl (and Kim?). Dianne B is doing the full marathon - you go girl! Race well. Consider going to cheer on our racers - always appreciated.

Join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am for a distance of your choosing. I'm assuming that most of the Scotia folks will use Saturday as a rest day - however, they may join in for coffee on Saturday.

For those training, distances are as follows:
NYC - 26 km - finally taper time - it has been a long haul - race day is in two weeks.
LV - 20 km -

From Rainer: A terrific day at Cavan, great weather, friendly people - Frances and her daughter Rihanna took the early lead in the 10km walk and held on till the 6km mark. At that point a couple of the other walkers took over ....then Rihanna passed the competition and came in a solid 1st, Frances was in 5th place, a terrific finish.

Rainer's knee was still not 100% - did the 4.7km race and fortunately was not dead last so he did not embarrass the Shore Things. Well done folks!

From Libby: Exciting News- Race Interests are gathering for 2018. Saturday is the last day before price increase to register for the Niagara Women's. Lou-Ann signed up already with Dawn and Charlotte planning to accompany her in the 5K race. Maybe more should join them for a fun weekend in Niagara. Do Consider. Olwyn has already committed to the Diva Race next June.
Please put your thinking caps on and see if there is race that interests you for 2018!

Lovely

Join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am for a walk - weather promises to be sunny and cool - great morning for a walk.

Scotia half is 16 km;
Scotia full is 32 km;
NYC is 16 km.

Weekday distances are 10 km and 8 km.

Remember to add a couple of hills into your route - hills are our friends.  It seems that many folks who are signed up for the Scotia half are away or AWOL - sign in to let others know if you want arrange an earlier start time. Libby, Ruth and Susan will be doing their distance walks on Friday and/or Sunday.

Those training have several serious distance walks during September and October. Let others know if you need to reschedule your walk - someone may be able to join you at an alternate time & place. Company makes those long walks so much easier.

Walks - Saturday Aug. 12 - Wednesday Aug. 16

Bottoms Up

Yikes - still in vacation mode - forgot to do this post in a timely manner - my apologies.

Option one:
Join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am for a distance of your choosing - main thing is to show up and walk and enjoy the company of friends.

Option two:
I'm going to suggest that those training for the Scotia Half may want to start at 7:15 - sign in on the blog to state your intended start time. Training this weekend is starting to ramp up for the Scotia Half with 12K recommended.

Other options:
Dianne, Ruth and Susan will head out on Sunday for their long walk - scheduled training - 16 km & 26 km - maybe we could find a compromise?

Our regular Sunday walkers meet at the Running Room on Queen St. at 8:30 am. Consider joining them.

Mid-week walks
Weeknights/days for "Half" racers should be 10K both days. I do recommend trying to add hills and interval training. Both help build endurance for the race. We are scheduled for Monday (7:00 pm) at Loblaws; Wednesday (6:30 pm) at Occasions. Please join this dwindling group - we'd welcome you, I promise.

Announcements & Information: from Libby - It is great to see some new names and race interests on the blog. Congrats to Eileen and Eva for committing to race in Halifax in September. .
