Walks: Sat. Dec. 31 to Wed. Jan. 4

Sparkles on the Danforth
Greetings, Shore Things. I (that is, Helen) am (or, is) your blog host for the next two weeks, so please send any blog news to me.

We have a Saturday walk on New Year's Eve this year. What fun! Hope you'll all come out to play, 8 am at our usual haunt – Tim's at Lakeshore and Leslie. Distance will be just as we please. A great way to end what some might call a horrible year.

(Note to Cynthia and Stacey, I still have your calendars. Let me know if you're coming.)

Some lucky people are still off work this week, and might opt to walk in the morning rather than the evening. If that's you, I suggest a compromise time of 8:30 am – so that it doesn't eat into the day.

Whether morning or evening, it's Monday from Loblaws. Wednesday, from Occasions. We're still not in training, to distance is at our option.

Please sign in to say where you'll be and when. That really helps!

For those who need to clear their head on January 1, remember the annual Hair of the Dog 9K and 3K at the Balmy Beach Club. Get info or pre-register at this link. But you can also sign up on the day.

Rainer has a shout-out that just a few walker spots remain for the Robbie Burns 8K on January 29th. Some of our Shore Things have already signed up. You can join them at this link. Fees go up on Dec. 31st. For newbies, this is a great winter race, with food, prizes after and interesting swag – a backpack this year.

More racy talk from Libby:

Race News is very limited these days with no training in progress.

With New Year's Day fast approaching, are there any of you with resolutions to train for a race or two. Please do let Libby know of race interests and sign ups!

Kudos to Dawn, Charlotte and Lou-Ann for registering for the Shopper's Women's Half. Any others ready to sign up for this fun race?

And that's our post for this week. Stay safe, everyone, and if we don't see you on Saturday, have a Happy, Healthy New Year! Love to all!

Lighting up a wintery night

Walks - Saturday Dec. 24 - Wednesday Dec. 28, 2017

Joy to all throughout the season

Somehow, the Christmas season is upon us again!  Join us on Saturday for a short seasonal stroll and quick coffee to get you in the Christmas spirit. We'll meet at 8:00 am at Tim's. Join us if you can. Would love to see you....

Monday's walk is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am at Tim's 2 (Vic Park and Gerrard). Great way to burn off a few of those calories.

Wednesday's walk is scheduled at 9:00 am at Occasions. Join us! Sign in so that others will know your plans.

If you celebrate Christmas, we wish you a wonderful holiday season.

Announcements: from Libby - we know that some of you are too busy to think about races in 2017 - however, consider a few options for the spring (and we'll remind you, again, in January):
1.  Hair of the Dog - Balmy Beach Club - Jan. 1, 2017 - great way to clear your head and start the new year.  Only 3 or 9 kms - you pick.

2. The Uxbridge Half Marathon on April 15th. A great way to kick off the spring. Check out the link at  www.uxbridgehalfmarathon.ca , also a link on the blog. There are three categories, Half Marathon race plus walk only categories for 10 and 5 K distances on trails!!! It looks really interesting. Libby has signed up for the 10 K; Susan is almost committed to doing the half but is waiting for company....

3. May 7 - Goodlife Half

4 May 14 - Sporting Life 10 k

How can you resist with such options. Let's do it!

To those who are travelling, be safe, be well and enjoy!
To those who are injured and/or ill, we miss you; we wish you the best and a better 2017.
To those who are MIA, please join us soon.

Happy holidays everyone.

Walks - Saturday Dec. 17 - Wednesday Dec. 21, 2016

 Looking good

Join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am.  The weather and/or conditions may be iffy but come out anyway - we'll do what we can. The friends and coffee are worth it regardless of the weather.

Mid week walks are the same for the week ahead:
Sunday 8:30 am at the Running Room
Monday (Loblaws) and Wednesday (Occasions) at 6:30 pm.
Mid week day time walkers should check in with Dawn.

A question about scheduling for your consideration and response:
1. Next Saturday is Christmas eve - I am going to suggest we walk as usual - sound ok?
2. Monday Dec. 26 is Boxing Day - I'm going to suggest we walk from Tim's 2 at 9:00 am. - sound ok?
3. Wednesday Dec. 28 - I'm going to suggest we walk during the day - say 9:00 am - sound ok?

Just asking a week in advance - would like your input before announcing the schedule for the holiday week.

Challenges - let's get thinking about goals for 2017
1.  Anyone interested in walking 150 km each month during 2017 in honour of Canada's 150 anniversary?  Easy peezy - let's do it!

2. Anyone interested in walking 2017 kms in 2017?

3. Anyone interested in walking 2017 miles in 2017 - that's a bit of a stretch - are you in?

4. Your challenge suggestions go here.....

Races
1. Take advantage of the lowest price of the season for the GoodLife Fitness Toronto Marathon!  May 7, 2017.  Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K and Relay, there's an event for all! Downhill, Scenic and Fast PB course. A Toronto tradition since 1977 attracting runners from over 50 countries. Prices go up December 16th at Midnight!  Arlene and Elaine are committed already.

2. Uxbridge trail/run walk on Sat. April 15th - half marathon, 10 km and 5 km. Sounds like a great way to get ready for spring. There is a dedicated walking category. Uxbridge is such a pretty town and close enough to drive within 90 minutes or so.  Any interest? Susan could be talked into it if there's company - trail walks are always a nice change.

3. Our racing diva Olwyn has signed up for yet another race!!! Sporting Life 10K is now open for registration - May 14 (Mother's Day).  Anyone else?

4. Your ideas go here ....

Let's get inspired for 2017.

Friday 9 December 2016

Day time walkers - check in with Dawn for the details.

Challenges: Last January, a few signed up to complete one of two challenges. As the year draws to a close, it is time to let us know (Libby or Susan) how you did. Rumour has it that a few fell off the challenge wagon - yes, that happens - but we'd like to hear from those who continued to work towards your chosen goal. And, we applaud all who took on the challenges.

Any ideas for challenges for 2017?  Let us know - it is motivating (for some) to have a goal.

To those who are travelling, be safe and enjoy! A few folks have just returned and we'd love to hear your travel stories and recommendations.  And, to those who are injured or ill or recovering, we miss you and wish you the very best.

Announcements: from Libby:  Robbie Burns - January 29, 2017 - consider entering this event to keep you walking in January. Sells out quickly: registration info: https://raceroster.com/events/2017/10293/robbie-burns-8k-road-race-2017

Announcements from Libby:  Check the Race Interest list on the website - a few people have signed up for 2017 races already - great prices when registering far in advance of race date.

Nice t-shirt and finishers medal. Post race we had Pasta and Meatballs, cookies, bananas, chocolate milk, bagels, energy bars and .... BEER. To have a beer at 8:00am was a treat. Big turnout in the 5km category and a lot of Half marathoners as well.I finished 303 out of 584 runners/walkers in the 5km but only 4th in my age category.

from Helen: There is a poll on the blog (main page) about the awards program. Check it out and vote.

from Libby: Our racing season has come to an end with no further "Race interests" listed for this year. Time to think of races for next year. Races keep us motivated to walk and train , especially in inclement weather. Two to consider:
Resolution Run December 29- with a new pink ladies jacket (Blue for men).
Robbie Burns 8K in Burlington is a great walker friendly race January 29. Do consider signing up. Only 80 walking spaces and it usually sells out in December. www.burlingtonrunners.com

from Olwyn: Thanks everyone for your good wishes for the Scotiabank Half; it was a good race, with some mild rain at the beginning. Congratulations to all who completed this race - well done!

from Rainer:  Update on 'Run Blue Mountain' race ... apart from rain just as the race was starting, it was a nice route through 'Apple Country' - through a couple of small villages but mostly along country routes. Very scenic and well marked and marshalled. Post race lunch of chilli and salad were ok with lots of apples for dessert. First place finishers in their age categories received and apple pie. Margy and I came in 2nd and 3rd in our age groups however we missed out on the pie. Nice little race worth doing in a very pretty part of Ontario. Congratulations to both Rainer and Margy - well done.

Announcements from Libby: Please put your thinking caps on to choose some races for next year...The Resolution Run is always a good start!

from Helen:  I know we hate doing intervals, but this just makes so much sense, I don’t know why we balk - check out this link:

Our sympathies go out to Jan and Ray - we've been thinking of you during this time.

Thoughts and best wishes to those who are travelling.  And, to those who are ill and/or injured, please know that you are in our thoughts - we miss you - take care.

Announcements:  from Rainer:  Race in Thornbury (near Collingwood) on Oct. 16th. They offer a 5km run, 10km run, 21km run, 5km walk, 10km walk - anyone interested? Margy and Rainer are doing the 10 km. The area will be beautiful at this time in the fall - worth the drive!

from Olwyn: Divas Half Marathon and 5 km I have signed up for this half; it’s on June 11 next summer on the Island. It looks like a fun, girls-only race; for those of us who are true divas! Race packet includes t-shirt, a tutu, pink boa, and other fun goodies. It is considered ‘the most FUN and GLAM race in North America’, and what are the Shore Things, but FUN and GLAM?!?

Thursday 29 September 2016

Walks - Sat. Oct. 1 - Wed. Oct. 5, 2016

Our race season is winding down but isn't over just yet. Ruth and Libby are doing Run For the Toad this weekend - have fun - hope you have trained for hills.  Olwyn and Helen are in the final weeks of training for Scotiabank - 16 km is the distance this week.

Congratulations to all racers last weekend. Montreal Rock and Rollers did us proud rocking to the finish of both 10 and 21.1 km on a brilliant sunny day. It was a great event with lots of music along the route. Montreal is a fun city for a race weekend get-away.

Rainer enjoyed the famous butter tarts of the Cavan crowd after his brisk hilly 10K race walk! He is encouraging others to mark this event on their calendars for next year.

Announcements: from Libby and Helen - start thinking about 2017 - what races interest you? Give it some thought; talk it up; come to the ShoreThings year end party with your race ideas.

Lastly, we send our very best wishes to those who are struggling with injuries and/or illness. You are in our thoughts.

See you Saturday!

Friday 9 September 2016

Walks - Sat. Sept. 10 - Wed. Sept. 14

The Perfect Place To Be

Join us, in the heat, again, on Saturday at Tim's. For those who are not training, I suggest meeting at 8:00 am for the distance of your choosing.

For those training for Montreal and Scotiabank, I suggest a 7:00 am start, for a distance of 16 km.
Libby suggested Plan B, in case of stormy weather on Saturday - meet at Tim's at 7:00 am on Sunday. Sign the blog comments section so others will know your plans - especially in the event of a storm.

Sunday morning, as usual, a few of us walk from the Running Room on Queen St.
Mid-week evening walks at 7:00 pm; Monday at Loblaws; Wednesday at Occasions. Midweek distances are 10 and 10 for Montreal folks; 10 and 8 for Scotiabank.

Announcements: from Eva - she is not able to go to Montreal - please contact her if you would like to use her race entry. If you don't want to complete a half, enter the 10 km. Eva was sharing a room with Trish - contact Trish if you want to discuss sharing.

from Bob - Bob has found an Italian restaurant for a group dinner on Saturday night located only a few blocks from the hotel in Montreal. Please let Bob know if you want to join in for the group dinner or if you have other plans. Restaurant can accommodate up to 20 folks in a separate room. Napoli Pizzeria, 1675 Rue Saint-Denis, Montreal, QC H2X 3K4

from Susan - reminder about The Terry Fox run on the island on Sun. Sept. 18 - a lovely way to spend a morning and support a great cause. Any interest?

We send our very best wishes to those who are ill and/or injured. We miss you and are thinking of you.
Pool Buddies

Thursday 1 September 2016

Walks - Sat. Sept. 3 - Wed. Sept. 7

Enjoying our Pool Party

Join us on Saturday at Tim's (yes, it is Labour Day weekend). Looks like we'll have a bit cooler weather - greatly appreciated by those who have long distance walks scheduled for Saturday. If you are not training, I suggest an 8:00 am start for a distance of your choice.

Those training for Montreal need to complete 20 km - I suggest starting at 6:30 am (option two is a 7:00 am start) so be sure to sign in and state your preferred start time.

Those training for Scotiabank need to complete 14 km - again, sign in with your preferred start time or join the Montreal walkers.

Weekday distance are for Montreal walkers: 10 and 10 km. Scotiabank: 8 and 10 km.

Labour Monday, I suggest meeting at Tim's 2 at 8:30 am for our walk.
Wednesday evening meet at Occasion's at 7:00 pm.

Announcements: from Stacey - she is unable to go to Montreal. Is anyone interested in using her race registration?  Contact Stacey. She also has a reservation at the race hotel for Saturday night - let her know if you'd like the room (otherwise she will cancel it). I think the hotel is fully booked now.

from Rainer: Owen Sound Bayshore race: Sunday morning was mild with temperature of 21C, good race weather and a walker start of 7:30am. A scenic course along the Owen Sound inlet. They had a 10km PowerWalk category unfortunately a small turnout. Margy lost out on 3rd place by 24 seconds ... however she finished in good form and looking good even though we had rainfall during the race and were drenched.
Post race food was limited to Bananas, Gatorade and Muffins. Definitely a race worth doing but not as good as our favorite the 'Buttertart Race' aka: Cavan Hills on Sept 24 where the food makes the race worth it. Home made Buttertarts, home made baked beans and other treats ... we can hardly wait.

from Susan: Is anyone interested in doing the Terry Fox Run on Ward's Island?- a lovely location for a 10 km walk. Wherever the location, the Terry Fox Run raises money for cancer research - a very worthwhile cause. Here is the Ward's Island information:
Registration: 9:00 am
Official Start: 10:15 am
Open Start: 10:15 am - 2:00 pm
Location: Ward's Island Association Clubhouse (WIA)

Walks - Sat. Aug. 27 - Wed. Aug. 31

Goofy Gals
Join us on Saturday at Tim's for the last Saturday walk in August - where did the summer go?

Those training for Montreal need to complete 18 km so I'm suggesting a 6:30 am start and a shady route. Weekday distances are 8 km and 10 km.  Scotiabank folks need to complete 12 km (join us at 6:30 - or choose a later start?). Weekday distances are 8 km and 6 km.

Others may want to start at 7:30 just to avoid the heat and humidity.
Sign in so that others know your plans.

A big thank you to Lou-Ann and Paul who hosted their annual pool party - a great gathering with lots of excellent food, great friends and good times.

Announcements from Libby: Best of luck Joan who is walking the Women's 10 k. Best luck also to Margy and Rainer who are walking 10 K in the Bayshore Race in Owen Sound.

from Rainer:  Consider the Cavan Country Race on Saturday September 24. A beautiful 10km through the countryside with those fantastic home made Buttertarts and home made baked beans post race. The food alone is worth doing this race. Walkers start at 9:00am with runners starting at 9:45am, Margy and Rainer will be there. All proceeds from the race benefit local charities.

from Eileen: Can anyone make good use of this belt and water bottle?  Let Eileen know - photo below.

Looking foward to seeing you on Saturday.

It has been really difficult to train these past few weeks....some of us need to get ready for a race and Montreal is just weeks away now.

On the move
Join us on Saturday at Tim's. Fortunately the forecast for this weekend is for reduced heat and humidity.

Nonetheless, Montreal training calls for 16K Saturday and I suggest that we start at 7:00 am if doing 16k.

Scotia trainees have a mere 10K on Saturday - could start at 7 or 7:30 - you pick.

For all other walkers, 7:30 is a great start time - Sign in - it helps.

Since it is a long weekend, I suggest that we meet at Tim's 2 at 8:30 am for Monday's walk.

Please sign in so others know your intentions.

Others may choose to start at 7:30 if walking a shorter distance. Perhaps we'd all be back to Tim's around the same time for coffee and visiting. Bring lots of water - remember the saying:  one in; one on.

Scotiabank:  8 km; 6 km; 6 km.

Announcements: from Lou-Ann: The annual pool party is Sat. Aug. 20th, anytime after 2:00 pm. Please let Lou-Ann know if you plan to attend. It is pot-luck. Food is always delicious; the pool is so refreshing. Many thanks to Lou Ann & Paul for hosting again this year.

from Olwyn: Think ahead and sign up for the Santa Claus race in Burlington Nov. 26th; only 5 km. It is lots of fun.

from Susan: For those of you who took on one of our two challenges - how are you doing? On track? need to catch up?  There is still time to meet the goal even though weather, vacations, and injuries (to say nothing about willpower) can make the challenge even more challenging. Let us know how it is going.

from Norma: the route along the boardwalk has construction at the Balmy Beach Club and therefore, we need to have a small detour at the Club. It is still possible to get past this point - watch for a little opening in the fencing to the north - streetside.

Thanks, Kim, for hosting a great wine & cheese gathering to kick off the Beaches Jazz festival on Thursday - very enjoyable.

Be Well.
