Walks - May 2 - 6, 2015

Our Debbie - forever in our hearts - rest in peace

It has been a sobering week - one in which we mourned and celebrated the life of our friend, Debbie. Imagine salting salted butter!

She would want us to walk so please join us on Saturday for whatever distance suits you. Tim's at 8:00 am.

Those doing the Good Life race on Sunday: do well and make us proud!

And, it is the final weekend of Hot Docs, so a few may be missing in action. Still others are travelling - walk wherever you are, whenever you are able to do so.

Mid week walks: Loblaws on Monday; Occasions on Wednesday; both nights at 7:00 pm. Day time walkers know your routine and I think Dawn will be back for next week.

Belated birthday wishes to Bob who celebrated by hosting a rocking good party. Thanks for including us, Bob. Great music; great fun. Photos to come at a later date.

Libby's Big Sur medal - congratulations

Walks - April 25 - April 29, 2015

Join us Saturday, at Tim's, at 8:00 am for the distance of your choice. For those training, Goodlifers need to walk 12K in the final taper to the race a week Sunday. K-W Half has been cancelled but the 10K is still running for any interested to join Margy and Rainer! Niagara Women’s racers need to walk 14K this weekend.
Mid week distances are 6-8 kms on Monday (Loblaws) & Wednesday (Occasions).
Congratulations to all the Yonge Street Racers. A cool but sunny day proved the formula for some great results! Photos to follow soon.

Best wishes to Libby at Big Sur. She's trained hard all winter for this race and I'm sure she will be rewarded.

Announcements: Check this link. Dr. Jean Marmoreo is interviewed after completing the Boston Marathon: She is an inspiration and the founder of Jean's Marines.
The 11th Annual New Albany Walking Classic is Sept 13, 2015. Rainer and Margaret are signed up. Check it out. Join them?

The Hot Docs festival is on - some of our walkers may be absent due to films. Forgive them for this conflict of interest.

Walks: April 18 to 22

Hopefully, this week's weather will make the attire seem out of date – but after last week's (and this week's) long walks, the sentiment might still be appropriate.
I'm writing this in advance, because this week I'm on the road in California. Yes, you may be envious. So if I'm forgetful or get anything wrong, you'll have to fix it in the comments.

Saturday's training distances reflect the approaching ends of schedules and race days for our trainees. For Big Sur, one last 12K before the race – by lucky coincidence, also the distance for the Niagara gals. Goodlife begins taper with 16K, KW gets one long kick at the can with 20K. (Anyone not doing 16K on Saturday might be interested in walking with Helen on Sunday. At least, that's the plan. The red-eye flight might prompt other ideas. TBD.) Weeknight walks require 8-10K.

Here's a link from Bob to a Toronto Star article about the misunderstood sport of race walking that I forgot to post last week. Bob also wonders if we should try for tickets to the walking event at the PanAm Games. Interested? Talk to the man with the plan: Sport of race walking no walk in the Park

At Rosetta McClain a month ago – see how the weather has changed! I hope.

Walks: April 11 to 16, 2015

What a great team we are: Shore Things Walking for Ian and cheering us on at the Harry's Spring "Run"-Off 8K (MIA here are Val and Margy doing the 5K, and Rainer handing out much needed sustenance. AKA: cookies.)
For the Harry's race, special congratulations go to Dawn for placing first in her age category, for the first time everand against runners! Arlene placed third in her own category – and while equally commendable, this is perhaps what we already expect from one of our speediest walkers. And we're not positive, but we think Bob was the first walker to cross the finish line with a chip time of 57:27 (and a pace of 7:11). Considering that hill, and the lousy winter for training, well done, everyone.

After the wonderful Harry’s race (great weather, scenic course, great goodies), we are now into full swing with training for the spring/summer season. It even promises to be relatively warm at last!

For Saturday distances: Big Sur is 16K before tapering, Goodlifer’s need to walk a whooping 20K, K-W half 18K and Niagara Women’s Half 16K. Check in on the blog to find company for your walk distance. It is so much easier with a little help from friends! Weekday distances should be 6-10K.

But come out, come out on Saturday for whatever distance you choose. Sign in to let us know what you're doing.
The Niagara International Marathon, Half and 10K registration link is on the blog. This fall half marathon on October 25th is the race Helen and Bob plan to do and it looks like fun, with varying distances for all of us. Check it out www.niagarafallsmarathon.com. The race is walker friendly but no separate prizes.

Almost at the top of that hill, with the finish just around the corner.

Walks - April 4 - 8, 2015

Easter/Passover bunny
This weekend offers a few different options - join in...
Many will walk in High Park on Saturday for Harry’s Spring Run. Start time is 10 am for the 8K. Olwyn and Helen are preparing ribbons to wear. Libby suggests meeting at 9:45 near the bag drop-off. Remember the park is closed to cars and parking will be limited on the side streets.
Some who aren't doing Harry's may meet at Tim's at 8:00 on Saturday - please sign in & check the blog, especially since there may only be a few at Tim's this Sat.
Training for Saturday/Sunday is: Big Sur- 12K, GoodLife- 18K. K-W Half- 16K, Niagara Half- 14K. Helen and Bob are walking to High Park from their house leaving at 8am. Let Helen know if you want to join them.  Use the blog to find a walking buddy.
Weekday distances for training is at least 8K one day and 6K the other.

Monday - two options: Tim's 2 at 9:00 am - a day time option for those who have the day off. Loblaw's at 7:00 pm for those who work. Check the blog to let others know if and when you'll be walking.

Wednesday at 7:00 at Occasions.

Helen will do the blog for the next two weeks while I walk Malta.
