Walks: Sat. to Wed., May 31 to June 4

Look, it's a Dande-Lou-Ann!
It's like old times! For the next three weeks, I'll be filling in for Susan on the blog -- so if there's anything you need to share, send it to Helen, folks.

Here's this week's distances: No distances at all! Unless you count 5K each on Monday and Wednesday for the New Albany racers in the first week of their schedule. You can manage that. Let's aim for 8-10K on Saturday, as Libby suggests, to stay in shape.

And the reason we have no distance is that this is race weekend for our Niagara crew.

From Libby:

Congratulations to our Niagara Half girls for such commitment to training and races over the last 13 weeks! We wish you well on Sunday and hope you all have a wonderful time, as the weather looks very promising for some spectacular scenery.

(As an aside from Helen: While you're in Niagara Falls, try to go see the corpse flower in bloom at the Niagara Parks Showhouse. It's a very rare experience!)

There is a growing interest in the Midsummer Night's race in August. A mere 15K doesn't warrant a real strong training commitment especially for anyone who has recently done a half. So far Olwyn has signed up with others interested. If you are, too, let Libby or Helen know.

Next weekend is the traditional Alfie Shrubb in Bowmanville with registration through the Running Room. New distances of 5 and 10 K are in addition to the traditional 8K. Walkers are well supported and the RibFest breakfast last year was amazing....just ask Rainer.

That's it for me. If I've forgotten anything, you know where to tell me.

Niagara Falls racers: On your mark, get set, go!

Walks - Sat. May 24 - Wed. May 28

Shorethings and their new hardware

Join us for our walk on Saturday. We have lots of flexibility this week as only a few are on a training schedule for distance. Choose your distance (avoid the annoying knats - just a tip from me) and enjoy good company - we'll meet at 8:00 am at Tim's (despite the various construction sites and road closures). Sign in to let others know your plans.

Evening walks are Monday at Loblaws; Wednesday at Occasions; 7:00 pm. There is a little farmers market Wed (near Occasions) that is worth checking out if you come a little early. Just follow the signs. Had a great band playing this week - plus lots of healthy things to purchase.

Races and training: Arlene and Elaine - all the best - I'm sure you'll make us proud while completing the Women's Half this weekend in Sunnybrook Park.

Those training for the Niagara race are on taper (finally). Distances this week are 12 on Sat. followed by 6 & 5 km during the week. We wish you the very best at next weekend's race.

We enjoyed a great walk last Monday in Leaside followed by brunch. Thanks Trish for organizing!  Great idea.

Announcements:
from Bob - Sat. June 21 - let's walk Toronto Island followed by brunch. More details to follow.

from Libby - Is anyone doing the race in Quebec City? Please let me know what races you have entered - we will help generate interest and training plans.

Still time to register for the Alfie Shrub classic - June 8th. Just a stroll, really, unless you are a type A personality with a need to compete.

from Susan - Sunnybrook has a Run for the Kids race with 15 and 25 km distances on Sept. 21st. Check it out. Any interest?

See you Saturday.

Walks - Sat. May 17th - Wed. May 21st

It's all about the hardware
These medals were just waiting for our Shorethings walkers who participated last Sunday (great weather for walking) in KW. Congratulations to all who got to take one home.

It is a long weekend but if you are staying in town, please join us on Saturday at Tim's at 8:00 am - for any distance that suits you. Those training for the Niagara race may want to start earlier - the distances this week are 16 km, 10 km & 10 km. Sign in to let others know your intentions.

Wednesday is at Occasions at 7:00 pm

For a change of pace on Monday, Trish is suggesting ...
That we might like a change of scenery for our Monday walk followed by breakfast at Leonard's restaurant. Let's meet at Laird and Eglinton ( you can park in the Canadian Tire parking lots) and we do a route through the valley of 8-10 km. starting at 8:30. The restaurant is right across the street from Canadian Tire.  Please sign in to the blog and let us know if you will be joining us. Sounds great, Trish.

Others may wish to stay locally, so again, please sign in so others know.

Thursday 8 May 2014

Walks - Sat. May 10 - Wed. May 14

Debbie and gang - so great to see you, Debbie!
Well, friends, it is a busy weekend....race weekend for the K-W group and Mother's Day for many of us - there is lots of reason to get out & celebrate.

Saturday may be a smaller group this week, but let's gather at 8:00 am at Tim's for whatever distance suits you. There are lots of those little knats flying around, especially close to the water - consider yourself warned!

According to Libby:
First- Congrats to Joan Weed on completing the GoodLife Half last weekend , sore foot and all! Please do continue to join us when you can!
At Last - The KW race weekend has arrived. A large group will head to KW on Saturday for a pot luck and for the Half or 10K on Sunday. Have a great race. The Niagara ladies will be using KW as a training walk for the Niagara race in June.
Weekday distances for those in training are 10 and 10!. The Women’s Half - Arlene and Elaine- need to walk 16K this weekend.
Food for thought ... future race consideration for next April. Lee Scott informed us there is a large group of walkers from Oakville considering the Big Sur Race for next April. The Big Sur International Marathon has long been a WOW walker favourite as they have fairly good walker support in addition to an unbelievable race course along the famed Highway #1 south of San Francisco- Race travels through majestic redwoods with phenomenal Pacific Ocean views. The distances vary from 21 miler, 10.6 miles (the walkers fav!) and a mere 9 miles . Registration seems to fill quickly and will open in July. I will keep you informed of further details. This year, Lyn Ballantine - a walker in the class Ruth and I take Thursday at 6:30 completed the race. She is a teacher and was able to obtain a day off  for an “event” from the school board...just to mention for our teachers!
Worth considering as we surely can’t have anther winter like this past one!
Remember - let Libby know of any races for which you have registered.
Great shot, Olwyn.
Sign the blog so we'll know whose coming out on Saturday. See you then.

Friday 2 May 2014

Walk - Sat. May 3 - Wed. May 7

Let's walk it....join us Saturday....at 8:00 am at Tim's for 6-12 km or whatever distance suits you.

Racing in K-W and/or Niagara, Libby informs me that a mere 12K for the KW crowd and a long 18K for the Niagara ladies! Some may choose to start earlier, so please check the blog.
Weeknight distances are 6 and 5 for KW...ahhh...taper week. Meet on Monday at Loblaws at 7:00 pm and Wednesday evenings at Occasion at 7:00. Daytime walkers know their times and meeting spots - please check with Dawn or LouAnn for information.

Announcements:
from Dawn....for those in K-W race next weekend:
Pot luck on Sat. May 10th as we have done for a few years. Our ‘usual’ gathering room has a microwave and fridge. Stacey and Peggy have this room and are happy to host the event. We will provide disposable plates, cutlery and glasses. Please bring a some food and whatever you want to drink, and join us. If you can’t locate us by the noise, the desk staff will be able to tell you the room number. The half marathoners will have an early start the next day so the party will likely finish early!!

See you Saturday - rain or shine.
