Olwyn takes on Yonge Street
Sunday was a great day for 10K, and Olwyn was smiling just as happily at the end of the race (although the picture is fuzzy), with a 1:24 finish. Well done, Olwyn! You also might be interested in seeing this YouTube video of Lee Scott coming in to a first-place finish – great form in action. And she makes it look so easy, damn her.

This Saturday, it's the June racers who have the long distance of 16K. Trish has put in a request for the Rosedale route, so please look at this route map. FYI, there's a rumour of a 7:30 am start; TBC in the comments.

Note your turnaround if you're doing less (May races have 8K on the old schedule*, 12K on the Wow version). As always, you might prefer a different route or a different distance. Sign in and let everyone know.

Monday and Wednesday, May racers have 6K and 5K; June has 8K both days.

*To explain "old schedule/Wow schedule", Libby has volunteered to create the race schedules this year, and will be moving us to Wow training (rather than the Marathon Dynamics version we've been using). The key differences are that Wow tends to have shorter, more intensive evening walks plus a few longer walks on Saturdays to build endurance. We'll groan a little at first, but in the long run (or walk) it will be better.

This just in from Libby – please put June 15 on your calendar:
We are planning a "location" walk on June 15th to start at either Sunnybrook Park or my house (more details to follow) - and everyone will be invited to my back deck (or house if it rains) for coffee and sustenance afterward. The coffee gathering will serve as a time to introduce the new roles for the Shore Things upon Helen's "retirement".
And Lynne is this week's birthday girl. Hope it's smashing, my dear!

A reminder that this is the Hot Docs festival, so some of our weeknight schedules might be screwy. All the more reason to sign in, folks.

Walks: Sat-Wed, April 20 to 24

The Spit trails damaged by last week's storm
Do I dare say "perfect weather" for Saturday's long walk? Okay, I'll risk it.

On the training schedules for this weekend: May races, 18K (although the keeners are dragging me along for 20K, starting at 7 am); June race, 13K. You're getting into the big ones now.

Monday and Wednesday: 10K and 10K for May, 8K and 10K for June.

As always, your distance is your own choice. Please sign in to state where you'll be, and when.

We had an excellent turnout for the new Shore Things management committee, and changes will happen over the next couple of months. A big thank you to all volunteers. We certainly have "many hands" so it will be "light work."

If you wanted to volunteer but couldn't make it to the info session, don't worry. All roles will run for one-year terms, so you can help out in future.

My darling husband Bob is this week's birthday boy. Happy birthday, baby!

Good luck to Olwyn in this Sunday's Yonge Street 10K! Hope you make the finish line in good time for your opera. We count on you for pictures.

Thursday 11 April 2013

Walks: Sat-Wed, April 13 to 17

You put your right foot in. That's what it *is* all about.
A very good day for races, last Saturday. Shore Things looked resplendent on both sides of the city, at the Harry's 8K and the Beaches Spring Sprint. Taking part and having fun is what it's all about!

This Saturday, the May racers get into serious distances. Some are even doing 20K. That's a little steep for my blood, with 16K on my schedule. So please sign in to say where you'll be.

June racers, it's a mere 10K. A bagatelle!

Monday and Wednesday it's 10K & 10K for May, and 6K and 8K for June. Let's have no more of this nonsense weather.

Have happy birthdays, Jim and Nishe! Hope the birthday elves treat you well.

For those wondering how to take over the world… or the world of the Shore Things… I invite you for coffee and chat this Sunday, April 14 at my place from 2:30 to 4 pm. It isn't hard, really.

Friday 5 April 2013

Walks: Sat-Wed, April 6-10

At the Rosetta McClain Folly
A super-quick post to give you a place to sign in. I won't be able to join you Saturday, as I'm at the Master Gardener National Conference. Please forgive my haste. Good luck to all the Harry's racers – may your weather be fine!

Saturday, both race groups are supposed to do 11K, but many will be racing in High Park that day. Monday, both groups do 8K, but we split on Wednesday: 10K for the May races; 6K for June.

After this rush, I'll be calling for potential volunteers to attend an info session about handing over the reins for the Shore Things. If this group is important to you, I urge you to step up and take on a role. Many hands make light work. I will be stepping down on June 30. June 30 will come quickly.
