The Shore Things 10K, and much more

Smiling faces at the Shore Things 10K 2011
Sunday is our big Shore Things 10K event. Rainer, Marg and all their elves have been working hard to make it a success, so it will be another fun day. Our start time is 8:30 am on Sunday, at the entrance to the Spit. Please show up by 8:15 to get your bib and make that last porta-potty visit. You know you want to! Sunday is April Fool's Day, too, so if you have something "foolish" to wear, please do!

Our route is straight down the Spit towards the lighthouse, cross the bridge, around the lighthouse, and back the same way. There will be refreshments at the half-way point. Porta-potties are also on the route.

An update from Dawn:
1. We have space for brunch at TKOs (from 10:30) if additional people are interested - and, if so, they should let Dawn know ASAP.  Currently, 36 people are signed up. Lou-Ann will be collecting the $17 at the restaurant, as our accountant is on disability.
2. Some of us will be walking from Tim's on Saturday morning at the usual 8am time if anyone wants to join us. The Bermuda people are hoping to do 16K (help....). Some of the volunteers for the ST 10K might be interested. Some others might want to do two days. Or maybe not!!!
Monday and Wednesday: Let's say 8K, unless otherwise stated. If you need a shorter/longer route, please let me know.

Happy birthday to our first April baby, Sheilah! Have a lovely day, girl.

Walks: Saturday to Wednesday, March 24-28

Monday night's (literally) balmy beach
I've put 10K on our schedule for the weekend, but if you have a different distance in mind, please say so.

We might end up paying for this summery weather with a wet and gusty Saturday. If that's the case, would anyone like to meet on Sunday at Tim's instead? I have to be at Canada Blooms at 11 (all set for triumphant victory or humiliating public defeat on the Toronto Master Gardener Trivia Team), so I'd prefer our usual start time of 8 am. Speak your mind in the comments.

Next Wednesday evening at 6:30 is the start of the Lee Scott 4-week Wow training session, easily accessible via TTC in the Bloor/Ave Rd area. There's still room in the class if you've been leaving this to the last minute. Contact Arlene or send me a message.

Remember that the Shore Things 10K is just a week away on Sunday, April 1. Are you ready?

Get well wishes go out to Charlotte, who was descended upon today by a wave of Shore Things, who found her in good spirits. There's a possibility she might go home on the weekend. Well done, warrior!

And again condolences to Olwyn. Some of us were able to share the moving service for her father today. His was a peaceful passing, surrounded by loved ones, after a long and happy life.

Walks: Saturday to Wednesday, March 17 to 21

Not so long ago, at a boardwalk near you
I believe the only ones whose training schedule has kicked in is the Bermuda group -- and I don't have a copy of it. So, Dawn, can you announce your distances?

Everyone else, let's make the most of this glorious weather, predicted to last well into next week. At least 10K on Saturday for those doing the 2012 Challenge – though your own mileage might be more or less.

Monday and Wednesday, we've been aiming for 8K or thereabouts.

Dawn has asked to to clear up a point about payment for the post-race brunch on April 1st: Please bring your $17 per person in cash for Dawn on the day of the race. Only the $5 per person for the race medals goes to Charlotte. Sorry for the confusion!

FYI, there is a Half Marathon Walk division for the WIN Whitby Half on May 27th, and we have a separate route along the lakeshore. This might be good (prettier than big roads) or bad (possibly busy). Still, it's a nearby spring half that we haven't done before. Sign up before the 28th of this month to avoid the next price increase.

Happy birthday to Ian! May the sun continue to shine for you.

Friday 9 March 2012

Walks: Sat. to Wed., March 10 to 14

A little bit of Taiwanese spring for you
We have a nippy forecast for Saturday. However, I've heard some say they'd like to get as much distance in as possible. I've even heard the number 14 bandied about. Let's just say, join us for at least 10K (or more, or less) at 8 am. We can take a straw poll when we meet.

The same goes for Monday and Wednesday. 8K will be the standard, but we can opt up or down. Soon, we'll be getting into real training season, with distances determined by our respective schedules.

Happy birthday, Mary! Hope you're having a fabulous day.

Note that the KW Walking Classic has been nominated for the Readers Choice Awards for The Best Walker Friendly Half Marathon Race at About.com. They need votes – and you know we're big fans because they certainly deserve them! You can vote daily until March 21st. Here's the link:

Also, race organizer Ian Barron of the WIN Whitby Marathon (May 27th) has written us to encourage walkers to enter his race. This is a race I'd planned to train for. Rainer has been in conversation with Ian about this, so ask him for more over coffee.

That's it for now. Let me know what I've forgotten.

Saturday 3rd - Wednesday 7th March 2012

Bermuda photos to stimulate your interest....

I'm doing this on behalf of Helen who is still away in warmer places.

Saturday walk from TIm's is 10k, Monday and Wednesday evenings from the usual places.    Monday and Wednesday earlier walks times are yet to be fixed.   If interested, please email me at dawn.henville@sympatico.ca and I'll let you know times - when I know them.

In the meantime, walk gently.
